lypanov # Is there any good reason to use Cassandra rather than riak? How does the
raw speed compare? Im having problems finding benchmarks :)
seancribbs # lypanov: it's hard to compare them side-by-side at least, in terms of performance
their access patterns are very different
lypanov # hey seancribbs. just listened to your awesome changelog podcast. thusly my being here :)
seancribbs # cool I didn't say much in that one, at least compared to andy
bingeldac # it is hard to shut andy up
seancribbs # what I can say is, we'll be releasing our basho_bench tool next week
and you can use it to test how well Riak will work for you
bingeldac # or cassandra
seancribbs # shhh
bingeldac # heh doh
lypanov # seancribbs: i wanted to use cassandra + hadoop with hadoop putting mapreduce
results back into cassandra for a scalable analytics web site (we're currently using
mongo and we are pretty certain it just won't keep us going that long without
sharding - which is scary)
seancribbs # lypanov: understood
lypanov # seancribbs: but one big thing stands up on the topic of riak:
seancribbs # either Riak or Cassandra would be a good choice for that
lypanov # i can actually install it without loosing my mind
seancribbs # glad to hear it!
lypanov # i haven't tried yet :P but it sure looks like i can.
seancribbs # Well, also you can get paid support from either solution
which is a win, if you're in that position
lypanov # brew riak vs holy crap help with cassandra for a 1 machine cluster
seancribbs # we like to make it easy to develop against :)
lypanov # seancribbs: *nod* if we need to scale fast we'll certainly be in touch. ;)
seancribbs # sure, even if you just want to do a time-limited trial, our
team is amenable to that
lypanov # are there any random benchmarks floating about on semi large clusters and write speed?
seancribbs # we've had people do awesome stuff without getting a subscription, though
— just using the open-source
lypanov # seancribbs: startup so zero budget at this point alas. (i prefer slow growth model).
seancribbs # gotcha
lypanov # if we get any publicity you'd be the first guys we call though. :D
seancribbs # lypanov: so, one of our customers may be releasing some numbers soon
lypanov # i spent a week or two on #cassandra but 50% of the questions are "i can't get it
running" which terrifies me.
seancribbs # but I wouldn't hold your breath
lypanov: well, Erlang is not simple to install in some instances (except on homebrew)
but we provide binary packages which include Erlang for rhel/deb/solaris
lypanov # seancribbs: you had me already at the fact you have chef page on your wiki.
seancribbs # you can thank benblack for the Chef cookbook :D
lypanov # that was the main reason i thought "oh sod it.. maybe its worth it"
seancribbs # he did a rockin' job
