Duncan Ray, Digital Strategy Adviser, Hackney Council
Hackney is known as London's cycling borough and over the last decade has seen the number of residents cycling to work double to 13% - leading to Hackney having the highest rates of residents cycling in London.
People commute from Hackney into central London and from all over London into the town centres of Hackney, principally Shoreditch.
Hackney is looking to design Hackney’s transports systems to take cycling in a greater way. We want to know what determines route selection, identify suitable new locations for cycle parking and understand what barriers there are to cycling.
In addition to this, with burgeoning tech scenes in different parts of the borough, it is becoming more important to integrate these areas overall. iCITY London and the new developments in Hackney Wick and the Olympic Park provide an opportunity for the principle transport link with Shoreditch and Tech City being cycling from the outset.
In order to understand how best to plan Hackney for cycling, we are proposing to involve cyclists and the community in the planning process, by taking the following three-phased approach:
- Phase 1: Collect data from the cycling community
- Phase 2: Analyse the data
- Phase 3: Integrate the findings into Hackney Transport planning around cycling
In order to assess the viability of carrying out this piece of work, we need to get a better understanding of the technology required to enable us to capture the travel patterns of cyclists in Hackney.
We are looking to engage a digital agency partner who can help us to carry out an audit of an existing app that has been used by cities in the US. It is under a Creative Commons license and all code in relation to it will need to be made opensource via Github.
