SST Phase 2 data collection elements

  1. Site visit
  • View aerial photography
    • Look for other impacts to the reach.
    • Delineate watershed
    • Estimate bankfull width
  1. Longitudinal profile
    • Length: 20-30 times bankfull up and downstream
    • Long enough to get past the effects of the road
    • Capture riffle/pool sequence detail
    • Maximum pool depths
    • Capture vertical changes (uniform reaches need fewer measurements)
    • Set a benchmark
    • Road details (fxing): inlet, outlet, fill height, plunge pool depths, tailwater control.
  2. Cross-section
    • Suitable reference reach
    • Start river left, capture through floodplain
    • Capture bankfull indicators
  3. Pebble count
    • ~100 particles
    • Heel-to-toe (no peeking)
    • 10-12 key pieces (not necessarily in the cross-section)
