We will use both of these in this class:

Public domain data for the world. Requires no attribution.
Good for global or regional maps (about zoom 10).
Not good for city scale.

First thing, grab the "admin 0" layer without boundary lakes, and replace the default layer in TileMill. This is a personal pet peeve of mine!

Direct link to download global urban areas Download this! (12.48 MB)
Grab at least one other layer that looks interesting to you.
There are three levels of resolution available to download:
- Large scale data, 1:10m (choose these)
- Medium scale data, 1:50m
- Small scale data, 1:110m
OpenStreetMap data for city scale mapping.
Released under the share-alike Open Database Licence (ODbL). Attribution required.
Updated weekly.
Shapefile downloads at: http://mapzen.com/metro-extracts/
Extracts come in two shapefile formats. We suggest the "IMPOSM SHP" format.

Or, download the extract for any city you like.
Unfortunately, the coastline is a complicated thing in OSM. It's not included in the Mapzen extracts.
You have two options:
-
Download the coastline for the whole world (it's big): http://openstreetmapdata.com/data/land-polygons/
-
Download coastline extracts from Michal Migurski's older metro extracts: http://metro.teczno.com/
Direct link to the coastline for the Bay Area Download this! (645 KB)
[optional]
Download whole countries or states. Includes shapefile format.
[advanced only!]
Warning, it's huge. Comes in XML or PBF format. You're responsible for loading it into a database.
