It's halfway between a coffee-table book and a book you'd want to read-through. I did the latter, and, well, it isn't a masterpiece in terms of writing - lacks continuity, often uses lingo without definition - but it makes up for that with the gorgeous typesetting and examples. 1 0
34913288 The Three Pillar Model for Business Decisions: Strategy, Law and Ethics George Siedel Siedel, George ="" ="" 4 3.00 Van Rye Publishing, LLC Kindle Edition 253 2017 2017/11/12 2017/07/09 read The bad: like the other business / sales books I've read, it spends almost half of its pages just telling you how good the book is. It reassures you that, yep, this will increase your sales, just as it did for Bill and Barbara.

The good: this is like looking though the eyes of The Corporation. The book will give you their take on why car companies shouldn't invest too much in seatbelts, why arbitration clauses are good, how you must avoid giving the impression of firing-with-cause, and so on. Not that you'll agree with (or should agree with) any of that, but, well, it's interesting to hear those points so clearly made. 1 0

29548767 Time Travel: A History James Gleick Gleick, James ="" ="" 2 3.58 Pantheon Kindle Edition 352 2016 2016 2017/06/23 2017/05/31 read Gleick's 'Time Travel' includes one scene with a physicist rolling his eyes wearily, explaining that, yes, time travel is possible in the case of black holes, but that he would rather not talk about it. Unfortunately I felt like that guy when I was reading this book.

There are only so many times I can read that time is like 'a river', or read a paragraph-length biography of someone's life in order to support their two sentences of historical contribution. The historical viewpoint, too, gives the story a sort of interrupted flow. Sure, it makes a lot of sense to 'start from the beginning' but I wish that the physical approaches (time as a field, as a measure of entropy, as relative or absolute) were enumerated rather than unveiled one by one, deep in mostly unnecessary context.

This might sound like a review written by some guy who heard about time travel and wants a time machine as soon as possible, with as little interference as possible. And maybe I've worn out my nonfiction reading ability by overdosing on these mile-deep scientific/literary history books. But anyway, Time Travel seemed, well, like a lackluster use of my time, a book that tried to be too much in and of itself and that never really developed into anything or built on itself, perhaps like our thinking about time travel itself. 1 0

I understand that history authors need to manufacture dialogue, but what he comes up with is chock-full of unbelievable cliches. And the entire 'war' is described only through the eyes of marketers, with everything else - the technological development, financial situation, view from the perspective of kids - elided.

Overall, not recommended. I hope someone writes a book about the same topic but spares us the dialogue. 1 0

If you follow Signal vs Noise, their blog, as I do, it's less worthwhile to buy the book. Many of the chapters are already shared as blog posts.

Some of the advice could be stronger if it thought harder about the opposing argument, rather than dismissing it as greedy or thoughtless. 1 0
6600498 Atomic Awakening: A New Look at the History and Future of Nuclear Power James Mahaffey Mahaffey, James ="1605980404" ="9781605980409" 4 4.24 Pegasus Books Hardcover 352 2009 2009 2016/12/20 2016/12/21 read It's a solid book, but it's trying to be different things at different points. He starts with lots of biographical detail - too much, for my taste, since I don't particularly care whether Oppenheimer had a nice childhood. And then it transitions into a methodical explanation of the atomic experimentation and industry, and then finally into a decently robust argument for nuclear power. The first 80% is completely non-rhetorical, but you really feel it speed up and energize in the last 20%, and I was left wishing he had chosen one or the other. 1 0
25739712 Etiquette: A Guide to the Most Common Etiquette Rules and Social Situations where Etiquette Matters (The Modern Ladies & Gentleman Book 4) Niel Schreiber Schreiber, Niel ="" ="" 2 3.38 Niel Schreiber Kindle Edition 48 2015 2015 2016/11/12 2016/11/12 read This is not a great work of nonfiction: it's a quickly-written ode to Emily Post, with updates for the modern era. And it's passable, for the first few chapters. It takes a turn at Chapter 7. Maybe the copyeditor stopped there, or another author swapped in, and at that point the number of grammar and style errors skyrockets. The effect is worsened by the prose, which, in the pattern of Post, goes over the top with its old-fashioned turns of phrase. 1 0

Regardless, it didn't click: the ratio of insight to connecting narrative seemed off, such that the book felt like a disjointed series of one-liners. 1 0

I read it after visiting the MJT, which I enjoyed greatly. I'm a fan, though I feel like it falls into the New Yorker trap of being too focused on the individual - we learn about Wilson's family, upbringing, habits, personality - but not enough about the ideas that he's trying to share. After all, this is a book about a relatively unique type of museum trying to send a message, and it would be interesting to also hear how this message is received and how it changes over the years. 1 0

There are one or two good notes, like pointing out how people often offer rewards they themselves would enjoy without considering the other party.

But besides that, it's absurd: there's a serious anti-intellectual bent combined with crazy culture (offering suggestions of what to do at "the club"). Science and studies cited are loose, with guesstimated statistics. Although the observations about human nature - brutal realism of people as plastic, self-centered, and fragile creatures - are usually valid, their portrayal here make the follower of directions act without allowing people to rise above these expectations. 1 0
10276354 The Great Stagnation: How America Ate All The Low-Hanging Fruit of Modern History, Got Sick, and Will (Eventually) Feel Better Tyler Cowen Cowen, Tyler ="1101502258" ="9781101502259" 3 3.73 Dutton Books ebook 64 2011 2011 2016/08/12 2016/08/13 read For pop-economics, this is an interesting and unusual read. It doesn't swing predictably Republican, Democratic, or other, and it's on a refreshingly more macro level than the 'random walk' trend. Where other writers lean toward character judgments of the rich or the poor, Cowen tries to present the problem as more deeply-embedded, as a cyclical slowdown in mankind's progress itself.

He is oddly dismissive of the internet as a technology. It's true that job creation has revenue on the internet has been limited, but the examples in this book are thin and the language, which is otherwise nice and balanced, distills the internet down into a "fun" fad. His focus is heavily on media companies on the internet - wouldn't be more interesting to compare, say, Amazon to Wal-Mart?

All in all, it's a worth a read and I appreciate the pacing and brevity - it feels exactly as long as it should be. 1 0

Since this is one of my few adventures into YA novels, I can't judge it with good relative accuracy, but it does fall into many tropes - tortured revolutionary political boy with female love interest and SF setting. The plot has few major hooks. But all-in-all, it's a nice read and, even if it laboriously explains every tech concept, it does so accurately and has a tasteful selection of references. 1 0

It quotes Jaron Lanier, one of the least likable and most unproductive voices in tech. And it often flows into a sort of 'but let's raise some more questions' type writing which is somewhat disappointing in light of the fact that authors have enough time to think and say something. 1 0

On the way to the thing that makes it different than other sports books, it does the classic 'here's what they all looked like and their relationships with parents and hometown' thing. It finally gets to the bits that are somewhat interesting, the reforms of the hiring system are mostly seen as revolutionary since they were pretty off-the-hinges in the past. 1 0

I found the peak to be at halfway through, with the pseudo-interview, and then the 'PowerPoint' section was surprisingly well-executed. However, the ending is unbearably lame to an extreme - not only silly future-thinking but it falls flat stylistically.

That said, it's a quick read and the variety makes it a good quick read - since the shifts in style can serve as anchors for the plots. Recommended for that purpose, but don't come expecting too much depth or dexterity in this one. 1 1 unspecified

Definitely amongst the saddest books I've read, but near the end, I started thinking about [b:Der Fremde Freund / Drachenblut|1514969|Der Fremde Freund / Drachenblut|Christoph Hein|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1184547651s/1514969.jpg|1506667] (in English), which resonated so much more deeply with me. Everyman's main character is at first almost relatable, but by the end of the book, there's a feeling that all of the sadness is entirely physical in nature - that he's caring so much about his body without any real plans of what to do with it, and without a shred of caring for other people. Roth plays with this in the last scene - in which the gravedigger is a far more relatable character, and someone who has a really different feeling on the passing of life. 1 1 unspecified

Tisserand seemed to do a decent job of interviewing everyone involved and getting himself into the scene. The only thing that I found kind of odd and interrupted my reading was the fact that, on a few occasions, the same person or event is introduced twice within the span of a few pages. 49552 The Stranger Albert Camus Camus, Albert Leman Sarı, Matthew Ward, Stuart Gilbert ="" ="" 4 3.96 Vintage International Paperback 123 1989 1942 2010/08/22 2010/08/22 read Good, possibly awesome, surprisingly comic and lighthearted. It was an unusual pairing with reading The Immoralist, which talks about some of the same emotional states but makes an entirely different statement about them. Possibly this didn't have an epic impact only because its sort of cold matter-of-factness has been adopted by many authors with less mojo than Camus. 1 0

69242 Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die Chip Heath Heath, Chip Dan Heath ="1400064287" ="9781400064281" 3 3.96 Random House Hardcover 291 2007 2006 2010/04/04 2010/03/29 read This is a decent book; a few of the concepts - styles of introducing gaps in knowledge and the idea of 'commander's intent' were quite useful. However, it too-often falls into the pop-psych mold of "Researchers from X tested whether X is X. The results were surprising" (no citation). The fact that the authors pay all too much credit to Gladwell makes it clear that they haven't woken up to the fact that many readers have grown beyond the enjoyment of such light science and the stratospheric concepts that authors try to wire together. I also wish that this sort of text would focus on one or a few industries or companies because the 'whoah, this applies to farming and web 2.0 companies' type of rhetoric is old and detracts from the storytelling by requiring too much setup and too little examination of each scene. 1 0

Although I do wish that there were more time spent on non-Abrahamic religions, there just aren't many other major monotheistic ones...

The account of the creation of the Trinity, which I feel like I've read at least four times in different places, really annoyed me... the unknowable paradox of the Trinity, which I had always thought (back in the dizzle) was something basic to Christianity, seems to be just the haphazard result of lots of stupid bickering. And then now that real Christian philosophy dies, we get an oversimplified, anthropomorphisized, really... backwards attempt to package all facets of God into Jesus. The fact is, belief in Jesus as divine and all-encompassing just isn't 'original' or, really, fundamental to Jesus's teachings.

So says I, at least. I'll add more as I think more. 1 0

I'm still reading it, to be honest, but I'm really into it. This hits that really cool point in religious studies writing where stereotypes, races, genders, and cultures are all taken correctly into account and seen as real factors on the development of religion. It does get a little intense at points: it's clear that Rosenberg does not identify as an agrarian Baptist southerner, but, given the lack of similar works, it has a responsibility to be a little over-the-top in introducing so many principles and facts of the Southern Baptist tradition which are probably obvious for someone deeply involved, but rather opaque to the outside world. 1 1 Good
