EXT. EDINBURGH STREET - NIGHT
1 | |
1 | |
The early hours of the morning, and along Edinburgh
streets a group of friends are heading home from a party,
drunk and boisterous from the celebrations
They wear or carry graduation capes and mortar-boards.
# End Scene 1 - Begin Scene 2 #
EXT. EDINBURGH STREET - EARLY DAWN
2 | |
2 | |
In amongst them, find - EMMA MORLEY, 22 years-old. Bright
expressive eyes behind NHS spectacles, hair badly-cut, she
is pretty, but seems almost annoyed by the fact. A little
awkward, a little removed from the crowd.
# End Scene 2 - Begin Scene 3 #
EXT. EDINBURGH STREET - DAWN
3 | |
3 | |
A crossroads. Friends are leaving now, as the street
lights turn off. Emotional embraces, promises to write.
DEXTER MAYHEW, handsome, confident, is embracing his best
pal CALLUM. | |
DEXTER | |
I bloody love you, Cal, really I do.
CALLUM | |
You too, mate. | |
And now TILLY’s joining in -
TILLY | |
Group hug! | |
EMMA watches the camaraderie, impatient as CALLUM and
TILLY start to kiss. DEXTER turns to EM, smiles -
EMMA | |
I should go too. Tilly? Tills? Hellooo?
But TILLY’s not going anywhere as the kiss continues. EM
and DEXTER take each other in for the first time.
DEXTER | |
We’ve never actually met. I’m -
EMMA | |
DEXTER | |
EMMA | |
called me Julie and spilt red wine down
my top. | |
DEXTER | |
I’m so sorry - | |
EMMA | |
Not at all, you were delightful.
DEXTER | |
Was I? | |
EMMA | |
No. No, you weren’t. | |
A beat, a smile - she’s letting him off.
EMMA (CONT’D) | |
Tilly, I’m going now. Tilly?
DEXTER | |
Callum, mate? | |
But they’re not listening. TILLY gestures (or hisses)
JUST. GO. AWAY! EMMA gives in. Shaking DEXTER’s hand -
DEXTER (CONT’D) | |
So if you’re not called Julie -
EMMA | |
And she’s going. Impulsively -
DEXTER | |
I’ll walk you home. | |
EMMA regards him - a decision.
EMMA | |
Well, this is a bad idea.

INT. HALLWAY, EMMA’S FLAT, EDINBURGH - DAWN
6 | |
6 | |
They continue kissing as they stumble into EMMA’s flat.
EMMA | |
So - this is me! | |
Drunk, laughing, they tumble towards the bedroom.
INT. EMMA’S BEDROOM, EDINBURGH - DAWN
7 | |
7 | |
EMMA, a little nervous, still in her underwear, is talking
too much. | |
EMMA | |
...debate is fine, but anyone can talk.
Sometimes action’s what we need -
DEXTER | |
(nuzzling her neck) | |
To change the world, I completely agree.
EMMA | |
...and that’s what’s so exciting about
theatre as a medium. | |
(DEXTER sighs, gives up)
Do you have any principles, any ideals?
DEXTER | |
Of course I do! | |
EMMA | |
Sleeping with two women at the same time
is not an ideal. | |
DEXTER | |
Well you | |
say | |
that... | |
EMMA allows a brief smile, then quickly stamps on it.
EMMA | |
So go on then. What’s the masterplan?
DEXTER | |
Back home to London, then India,
Thailand... | |
EMMA | |
‘Travelling’. Why not just say I’m off on
holiday for three years?
DEXTER | |
Because travel broadens the mind.
EMMA | |
I think you’re probably a bit too broad-
minded as it is. | |
(his cue to kiss her again)
Anyway, I didn’t mean | |
tomorrow | |
or this | |
time next year, I meant the future-
future. What are you going to be when
you’re, I don’t know...forty?
DEXTER | |
Forty | |
? Good god, forty. Can I say famous?
Rich? | |
EMMA | |
Terrible. Just a terrible human-being -
DEXTER | |
The thing is, I’ve given it some thought,
this getting-older-thing, and I’ve
decided I’m going to stay exactly as I am
right now. | |
EMMA | |
(taking him in) | |
You always look like you’re waiting for
someone to take your photo.
DEXTER | |
You want me to go? |
