My wishlist for a customized keyboard are basically
- full 24 function keys [1]
- two altgr/windows/meta/whatever keys (old windows 95 keyboards used to advertise this, then it went away)
- either 1 or 2 context menu keys
- analog volume control (wheel, not buttons)
- no full 1-inch border around the top/sides
- history back/forward buttons next to the arrow keys
- I don't care about mechanical keys, they're too loud.
- as a nice touch, include blank keys/caps for some of the function keys, to make them easier to relabel.
- no stupid dedicated buttons for calculator, browser, email, media player, sleep, etc. I'll put those where I want them, thanks.
- affordable. I'll pay extra for this, but not $100+; none of this requires unusual hardware or software.
- no stupid LEDs, please.
- if the keyboard is a USB keyboard, include at least one extra port for a mouse. Any ports included should provide enough power output to reliably power a cheap USB mouse (IE, the keyboard/mouse combo shouldn't need more than the 0.5A from a standard usb2 port).
- unicomp 122key has all the keys I want except volume control... But the layout is way off; the keys at the left shouldn't be there: the printscr/scroll/break keys should be at upper right; the menu keys should be at the bottom. I'd rather have the more modern wide enter key with the pipe above it. I don't really want a mechanical keyboard, because they're too loud (I've got several old IBM keyboards here). Basically, I want a modern keyboard with the modern layout (so I don't have to remember where I am), with the added older keys.
- OS wishlist: windows should have a universal play/pause/prev/next key definition like Android has, so I don't have to define these keys in every media application and browser. Hitting play/pause while fb2k is going should not open wmc or vlc or whatever my current default media player is. And I shouldn't need a background program running to deal with this, either.
My wishlist for a functional mouse:
- scroll wheel is the middle button
- side scroll
- a button on each side of the mouse, rather than two buttons on the left side
Basically, the Microsoft comfort mouse 4500 is what I use, but it falls apart after two years of use (the scroll disintegrates and the rubbery finish on the sides starts peeling).
