Good for: demo purposes or seeding a small group of assignable user names/avatars.
I came across a need for a set of neutral generated user names. Pulling them out of a gender-neutral name dictionary was pretty lame. I also wanted some form of distinguishable avatar. This led to looking at a list of web-friendly color names.
I removed the colors that were too similar or too close to white. Also removed were the duplicated color names like dark FOO and light BAR.
The colors could be displayed as boxes for the avatars. They match the names!
It turns out that color names and popular human names have a lot in common!
The list is a TDV (tab-delimited values) file. Use cut/awk to translate it
into whatever HTML you desire.
