Installing Alacritty, Tmux, Fish, OMF, bobthefish

Alacritty, Tmux, Fish Setup

A short tutorial how to setup a nice terminal environment using Alacritty, Tmux, Fish, OMF and the Fish theme bobthefish.

Tested on Pop_OS 20.04.

Basic Installation

  1. Install the required packages:
sudo apt install alacritty tmux fish fonts-powerline fonts-hack-ttf
  1. Install OMF (Oh My Fish):
curl -L https://get.oh-my.fish | fish

Source: https://github.com/oh-my-fish/oh-my-fish

Fish Theme

omf install bobthefish

Source: https://github.com/oh-my-fish/oh-my-fish/blob/master/docs/Themes.md#bobthefish

Font Configuration

  1. Copy 45-Hack.conf to /etc/fonts/conf.d/45-Hack.conf. *
  2. Copy 46-enable-terminess-powerline.conf to /etc/fonts/conf.d/46-enable-terminess-powerline.conf *
  3. Run fc-cache -vf to (re-)build the font information caches

* Not sure if these steps would really be required since I firstly tried to install the Hack font and Powerline manually (before installing it via apt).

Terminal Configuration

  1. Copy the .alacritty.yml to ~.
  2. Copy the .tmux.conf to ~.
  3. Copy the config.fish to ~/.config/fish/config.fish.

Automatically Start Tmux inside Alacritty

The following snippet from the .alacritty.yml configuration makes that tmux is automatically spawned as soon as Alacritty is started.

shell:
  program: /usr/bin/fish
  args:
    - -l
    - -c
    - "tmux attach || tmux"

Fix Terminal Scrolling

When you are inside tmux, you won't be able to scroll via mouse or Shift + pageup/pagedown. The provided .tmux.conf configuration is here to fix this issue. Source: https://dev.to/terkwood/fast-scrolling-with-tmux-and-alacritty-3dmn

# Mouse bindings
#
# Mouse bindings are specified as a list of objects, much like the key
# bindings further below.
#
# To trigger mouse bindings when an application running within Alacritty
# captures the mouse, the `Shift` modifier is automatically added as a
# requirement.
#
# Each mouse binding will specify a:
#
# - `mouse`:
#
# - Middle
# - Left
# - Right
# - Numeric identifier such as `5`
#
# - `action` (see key bindings)
#
# And optionally:
#
# - `mods` (see key bindings)
#mouse_bindings:
# - { mouse: Middle, action: PasteSelection }
# Key bindings
#
# Key bindings are specified as a list of objects. For example, this is the
# default paste binding:
#
# `- { key: V, mods: Control|Shift, action: Paste }`
#
# Each key binding will specify a:
#
# - `key`: Identifier of the key pressed
#
# - A-Z
# - F1-F24
# - Key0-Key9
#
# A full list with available key codes can be found here:
#
# Instead of using the name of the keys, the `key` field also supports using
# the scancode of the desired key. Scancodes have to be specified as a
# decimal number. This command will allow you to display the hex scancodes
# for certain keys:
#
# `showkey --scancodes`.
#
# Then exactly one of:
#
# - `chars`: Send a byte sequence to the running application
#
# The `chars` field writes the specified string to the terminal. This makes
# it possible to pass escape sequences. To find escape codes for bindings
# like `PageUp` (`"\x1b[5~"`), you can run the command `showkey -a` outside
# of tmux. Note that applications use terminfo to map escape sequences back
# to keys. It is therefore required to update the terminfo when changing an
# escape sequence.
#
# - `action`: Execute a predefined action

#
# And optionally:

# - Super
# - Shift
# - Alt
#
# Multiple `mods` can be combined using `|` like this:
# `mods: Control|Shift`.
