PS Vita 3.69/3.70 Jailbreak Public Service Announcement

PS Vita 3.69/3.70 Jailbreak PSA

NOW AVAILABLE

First of all, thank you for your patience and support, your wait will soon be over. It's been more than half a year since the release of h-encore and it has reached nearly half a million downloads!
Now it's time for my second and last jailbreak for the PS Vita. Unlike previous exploits chains, this one will not use a WebKit or savedata exploit as entry point, but a novel one.

The upcoming exploit chain consists of a PSP Emulator Escape. This means it is exploiting bugs in the emulator to escape the sandbox and run native ARM code. While this is cool and technically very interesting, there is a catch: your device must be linked and activated with a PSN account, such that you can download and install a PSP game from the store. The problem is that in case Sony releases a new firmware which fixes this entry point, you'll not be able to access the store anymore and therefore, not be able to hack your device. Hence, some coordination is required, such that nobody misses the chance (if you're maintaining a blog or forum, please stick this PSA on top, so people are aware of this opportunity).

For that reason, I am giving you 6-8 weeks time to download and install a PSP game, then I will drop the jailbreak. This should also be enough time for you to search and buy a new PS Vita.

Follow the instructions below to successfully prepare your device for the hack:

  1. If you're on firmware 3.69, you have two options:

    • Either update to firmware 3.70 (go to Settings → System Update).
    • Or set DNS to 212.47.229.76 (go to Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Settings → Your access point → Advanced Settings and set DNS Settings to Manual and Primary DNS to 212.47.229.76).
  2. Register a PSN account if you don't have one yet (note that only 3 devices can be activated using the same account).

  3. Download and install any PSP/minis game (PS Vita or PS one Classics do not work). There are demos in most regions (if you know a title that is not listed here, please let me know):

    • EU/UK: Ape Quest
    • NA/SG: LocoRoco Midnight Carnival
    • JP: YS seven

    Unfortunately, if you can't find a demo in your region, you must either buy any PSP/minis game, or register a new PSN account in one of the regions listed above.

  4. Please make sure that your demo is a PSP/minis game. To verify, please launch the game and hold the PS button for a while. Then a quick menu should come up with the Settings option, where you can set bilinear filter, etc. If this option is not there, you've likely downloaded the wrong game. For help, please consider watching some youtube tutorials and see how a PSP game should look like.

  5. Download and install qcma to make a backup of your game (launch Content Manager on your PS Vita and follow the instructions on screen).

If you have completed the preparation, you can now sit back and come back in 6-8 weeks for further instructions. It is important that you do not unlink/deactivate your PSN account or restore your settings in this time.

Furthermore, I am looking for a cool exploit name. Best would be a name that is related to sandbox/emulator escaping. If you have something cool in mind, feel free to make a suggestion.

Last but not least, I would like to ask you a favour: if you're following me on Twitter only for PS Vita news, please stop liking/retweeting/commenting to tweets of mine that are not related to PS Vita. The reason is that I am planning to use Twitter more "professionally" in InfSec. There were so many times when I had conversations with people that got interrupted with "3.70 hack wen". I know this is partly my fault, since I didn't give you an exact ETA, but that's because I have got my own real life. I said I'd release the hack somewhen in 2019, such that I do not put myself in too much pressure, as I am currently studying and working on my Bachelor's thesis. I never asked you to praise me or look at as a god or whatever, but the disrespect of some people nearly kills my motivation. If this doesn't stop, I might completely stop working on the PS Vita.

That exploit chain is from PSP Emulator..well..I remember Ark from 3.63.. you are pretty re-emulating a new exploit using the same strategy about psp demos.. so you can nominate : Re-Xcaped or , ReEmulated or H-Emulated.
I thank you for all of your work and support for all PSVita Community.

First of all, thanks for all your hard work on the Ps Vita scene, if it wasn't for you my vita surely would be just getting dust.
Now my suggestion for the name is take again the Japanese influence like in the previous exploits, for example in Japanese escape is 逃げる or Nigeru/Nigero so you can take it with some more humor and make it NIGGERo just for fun.
Jokes aside, there are a lot of ways to conjugate that verb in this website:
http://www.japaneseverbconjugator.com/VerbDetails.asp?txtVerb=逃げる
Other alternative is a synonymous for escape in Japanese like Moreru or Afuredasu both somehow can mean leak out/pass through/come through/filter out/pour out/escape/overflow in this case H-Moreru/H-Afuredasu (Weaboos or Hentai lovers will laugh a lot with this lol) would be good names

Also, I downloaded the LocoRoco Midnight Carnival demo when I bought the Vita from another person some weeks ago on 3.70. There is an update to the demo, version 2.00. Should we take that update or leave it at the current version when downloaded from the PS Store, which shows as a simple "-" in Content Manager?

Finally, I will say that your work is sincerely appreciated by the majority of us, even some of us that are silent and patient, as opposed to some being loud and pushy FloW. Thank you.

For the names, I got some in mind:
1 - "SandboxOverFlow"

or (and I think this one will be perfect:)

2 - "detta!" (出った! as it means "it got outside". The real trick on this comes when we look at other translations of "deru"(出る): outflow, go out, efflux, rise out... OutFlow there will make a perfect pun. So it could be "detta!" or "deru" (no conjugations)

偉大なエスケープ
Idaina esukēpu
Great Escape

After the movie, The Great Escape.

Although Idaina esukepu is a bit of a mouthful, so I think it could be shortened to -- Idakepu.

Since this exploit would be the Great Escape for the Vita, and the Vita is a Great Escape from reality, so to speak.

Edit: (And naturally, the symbolism between Great Escape and jailbreak can be thrown in there.)

It is ready, but as it says in the article. The fear is that even though the Vita is on EOL, Sony may patch the exploit not long after he releases it. Which would make it useless and require a whole NEW exploit to be created for the 3.71 fix.

As such, he's given the community about a month and a half to procure a Vita, lay down the preparations if it is 3.69/3.70, so that as soon as the exploit drops, they can all rush to perform the exploit.

Sony might not do anything about it, or they might have the exploit patched within a week or two of release. It's really pretty decent of him to give everyone some lead time to get ready for it.

You install qcma on your PC. On the Vita, you launch the (already preinstalled) Content Manager and connect to your PC with it once qcma is running on your PC. You perform the backup from the app on your console.
PS: If you have troubles connecting with USB like I had, try connecting via Wi-Fi instead. It should be decent fast, especially if a demo PSP game is all you're going to be backing up.

@TrialMacameau That step is required for both systems. The note about 3.69 is because they can either update if they want to, or do that step straight away without updating. The step in itself is to prevent Sony from updating our Vitas to even higher firmwares. You need to download the Psp/minis demo, and prevent your Vita from updating itself automatically.

@nitephlight Well, the settings suggest it is a PSP game. If you want to be sure, you can try what I did:

Search Youtube for a video called "PS Vita 3.70! VHBL & Emulators INSTALLATION! With PSP DEMO Install!"; it is very likely the same procedure for TheFlow's hack, only with VHBL that lets you play some emulators of the PSP excluding PSP itsef.

If it works, don't worry, you won't be wasting your chance; you can delete it and/or patch the game again.

@MikeRobertsonion No reason whatsoever.

With the jailbreak you have, you should already be able to play everything it has to offer without trouble, and you change the version it shows online so that you can.. uhm, do whatever online that can still be done. So no, no reason for you to update.

@Kyoumandy

This comment has been minimized.

Copy link

commented May 4, 2019

@glitchracer The backup is to be patched with a sort of "portal" into the PSP emulator. The jailbreak consists of another "portal" for "escaping" the emulator after you enter the patched backup. If you don't do the DNS step, they could patch the way "out" of the emulator, which is what TheFlow is worried about. You would then end up with a way into the emulator, but no way out of it.

You need the DNS step to prevent yourself from wasting your own time.

@RiSTNVC As long as the account is signed in and you are able to download games, no problem. If, however, you can't sign into the account (say, the password is not saved in the Vita itself), you will have to create another account or reset the password, because it is needed to download the PSP game from the store.

"QCMA" is a program that connects to the PS Vita. You have to download it (for Windows, in my case), and follow the instructions of the installer. The PS Vita has another program called "content manager" that connects to QCMA via USB or Wifi; You have to run QCMA in your computer, and content manager in the PS Vita. Once they're connected, navigate in content manager of the PS Vita to: copy content > PS Vita to PC > PSP Aplications > The game you chose. It will be copied to your PC, and you'll be done.

@Kyoumandy i have successfully downgrading from 3.70 to 3.60 using steps above and modoru. I am confused about the FAQ:

"Trinity bubble disappeared after downgrading." - Sony prevents you from playing games that have been downloaded from a higher firmware. Therefore, after downgrading, it is hidden. You can redownload the game on your lower firmware and reapply the Trinity patch to make it compatible with your current firmware and higher.

I want to do the steps of redownloading the game and repatching for trinity again, but i cannot access PS Store since it asked me to update software (to 3.70) how do i redownload the game again? i want to show the henkaku setting again since its missing after downgrading.

Try using the browser, and visit: henkaku.xyz/go (the full link is "http://henkaku.xyz/go/", but it'll still work the short way. That way you can use the webkit version of the Henkaku installation. After that, you will have the henkaku settings available.

After doing the webkit exploit, you'll have the henkaku settings. In these settings you can change the version of your firmware that is shown online; change it to 3.70 (this feature is called "spoofing"). After this, you'll be able to access a psn account without updating, though I would not try using my main account for this.

Just a question : "If you don't downgrade your device now, you may lose the ability to launch Trinity later and therefore not be able to hack your device anymore", does anyone knows why ? what's the difference with launching the HEN from a 3.68 ?

@Kyoumandy

This comment has been minimized.

Copy link

@nicolaschaufette

It is probably a reference to the danger that is -forgetting- to "not update" your device. Say, if for any reason you needed to rebuild the database or reset, and then forget to follow the steps for preventing an update, you might end up receiving an update patching the device and thus prevent it from opening the exploit anymore, or from receiving it from QCMA. In older firmwares you can use a permanent solution for this; the device boots up jailbroken from the beginning with Enso. With Trinity you can still access the full henkaku settings, but only temporarily while the device is on or suspended.

With a permanent solution you can even install a plugin that block any update directly into the firmware. With Trinity it might not work until you open the app and it might be too late.

Now I'm stuck with VitaShell and MolecularShell as both act as a file browser... which can I safely delete if I'm on 3.60 ?

Thanks. I now have a h-encore 3.68, not sure how it's better because it will be subject to the same issue, but OK, I'll try to be careful ;)

@TrialMacameau I read somehwere that MolecularShell is an old version of VitaShell.

@nicolaschaufette I thought the same, but what if the 3.70 doesn't ask for confirmation before updating? I am on 3.60 after downgrading and I've already forgotten to do that, and it asked for confirmation. I obviously pressed "cancel".

hi, I just wanted to ask something since I'm quite confused and probably a bit concerned

I'm probably done with the jailbreak part

  • installed trinity (have vitashell and henkaku installed afterwards)
  • installed modoru - downgraded vita to 3.68
  • installed h-encore (which also let's me access henkaku and vitashell again yes?)

since the trinity bubble disappeared after I downgraded, do I have to put it back again? or is it fine even if I don't?
and do I have to install other stuff? or the ones I have are already enough?

you don't need it again, use h-encore instead. Yes, you can access henkaku and vitashell

I know now why TheFlow said that we may not be able to use Trinity in the future. It's because Trinity relies on the system being activated. So even if you don't update, and for some reason you need to reset your device (say, for example, you installed too many plugins and the system keeps freezing for some reason), you will have to activate it again and Sony might not be accepting more Vita activations (they might even ban the console). So if you don't downgrade, you are fully reliant on the system being able to be activated.

I found out the hard way... Also, DON'T install a plugin called "IMCUnlock", it soft-locked one of my devices, and the warnings of the necessary steps to avoid bricking it came AFTER, in the creator's Github page. I luckily have another Vita all the same, and the bricked one will be hackable again when XYZ releases their Webkit hack... someday in the coming months, I guess.

Thanks for your work on the hacking scene!

I would think that PSP2HEN would be a good name

PSP2 - iirc that's the name for the Vita in the files
HEN - obviously for HENkaku
and the 2 in the middle because you can think of it as "to"

@Kyoumandy Unfortunately I did use IMCUnlock and it didn't bricked the console luckily... I just had to reformat the system and re-jailbreak everything back in working order

@TrialMacameau

Did you downgrade? You might find yourself an unpleasant surprise. Go into settings, system and see if you have a "0 GB" memory inserted in "format memory", not in system info. I was able to get everything working too, until i wanted to update to 3.65 (via qcma to be safe) and the problems started. It actually took a full day until i noticed.

It was downgraded to 3.60 @Kyoumandy I just needed to factory default the console to fix it

I still have the 0 GB in the format memory though so what I can do from here ?

Oh and it was the IMCUnlockLite from the Homebrew Browser

@Kyoumandy

@TrialMacameau And that is exactly the problem, though I do have to take part of my own responsibility; I downloaded IMCUnlock from the Homebrew Browser without visiting the creator's page for details.

Apparently I also downloaded too many plugins, or there were too many mistakes and disorganization. I had downgraded to 3.60, and had a lot of apps working, but the system kept freezing. In one occasion after a restart it even showed me that I was still on 3.70 with nothing working, and then after another restart I was back on 3.60 with all plugins working, but still freezing. Long story short, I thought I had uninstalled IMCUnlock and decided to go back to 3.70 to try the downgrade again (just to see if the freezes stopped happening), and I ended up realizing that I could not use Trinity anymore, because it asked for activation, and I knew that, but what I didn't know was that the activation process would try to use that "0 GB" card to download the activation file, and now it keeps showing an error related to low storage. I read after all this that the creator set a default of "0 mb" for the application and there were no options as far as I saw in the app. There was only one button.... but anyway, at least I have another one still working, and before I went back to 3.70 I was able to use the Webkit exploit of Henkaku in 3.60 so I know it works. I'll just have to wait for Team XYZ to release their 3.70 exploit that they showed early this year... and I had bought sd2vitas with cards for both consoles... damn.

You can still try to solve the problem before it gets worse. I can't even download free games from the store.

I read somewhere that the only way to remove the "hack" is to use the creator's own manager, from his Github page. It was a comment from the creator *himself when asked if the modification was permanent. He said "yes, the only way to remove it is by using the provided manager"... They should put that in the Homebrew Browser...

It does says this however "If you want to disable the internal partition for some reason, just redo the process. Instead of removing, the internal ux0 partition is disabled (to prevent syscon from blocking the original memory cards after a user uninstalls it without having a sony mc inserted). You can remove it fully using IMCUnlock's 0mb option (if you use this option remember to have a sony mc inserted and mounted as ux0)." @Kyoumandy

Strange... so even the process for removing the partition leaves a 0mb partition blocking the system. I had a memory inserted and still didn't fully remove it... Anyway, I'm just gonna go die in a corner.

Aggrrr, I envy you.

For my part I think I can do something now: I had the sd2vita mounted as ux0 when I installed and uninstalled the plugin, so whatever files were written during the process must be there. I'll copy all the content to the Sony memory card, and see what happens. I'll have to skip a few applications, though.

Is it possible, after doing the steps and installing/running Trinity, to change the PSN user on the Vita? (I haven't used modoru to downgrade yet....)

@Pilgrim0819

Yes and no. You can reset the console and start from zero, you will have to do the steps for Trinity again. This way you'll be able to start the console again with another account. And the "no" part is you can't change it "on the go" (if it applies as a saying) without losing something. I mean, you could use a homebrew called MLTActivator that will change your account and activate the console with a dummy account, you can keep all the games and apps you have at the moment but the console will be disassociated with any previous backup. But your main account will be safe, which might be what you're worried about.

You might need to activate the console, but don't do it through the official means. Instead, download a homebrew called "Vita Activator" or Account Manager. It probably would work through the console's official settings, but there are reports of people getting their accounts banned after doing it. Try the homebrews only, and you'll be fine.

@Kyoumandy But what if somehow, we reset the console to default settings and redo the hack can we use the Vita Activator or any offline activator like MLTactivator ?

@Kyoumandy

commented May 25, 2019

@TrialMacameau Vita Activator needs to connect to the internet to generate the file. I think it actually contacts Sony to verify that you have access to your account, but generates the activation files in the console itself (I read something like that, and it matches my experience with it). You don't need to spoof another version when using it, but you will need it to access PSN and everything related to that (the benefit is the assurance that you won't get banned for activating while spoofing another version).

MLTactivator, on the other hand, completely shifts the device's account for a dummy one, all offline, and generates the files in the console even if you're not connected to the internet, but I'm not sure what limitations it might signify. I think it had a thing going on with the backups, but I don't remember all.
