¹ Should work if Mixin-0-7-0-8-Compatibility is applied.
² Cull Particles isn't needed anymore in newer Forge versions, it was implemented in forge.
³ Do not blame me if you didn't read this notice, if you try to load a older world in a newer instance of the game, and you have one of these mods installed, bad things will happen, uninstall the mod first.
⁴ Some of the mods that have Sodium as an incompatibility, might work if you use Indium
⁵ AI Improvements newer versions (1.14+) don't have as much impact as the older versions have, since in newer versions of Minecraft, a lot of fixes to the AI are implemented [Sources: Curseforge page FAQ, Dev]
⁶ Halogen has issues with forge's ExplosionEvent, see sodium-forge#33.

I looked into the revisions and saw that this gist was originally created as list of mods instead of Optifine. Now it seems like it doesn't but there's still no Optifine in this list. Is this some antipathy to it or maybe just too many compatibility problems? Just wondering.

This gist was originally created to be used as an update of the "Optifine Alternatives" trick that used to exist in the Modded Minecraft discord.

Optifine breaks a lot of systems, principally in modded, and it's incompatible with many things (Hence the need of a trick/command only for that), so I preferred not to include it.

The gist name was changed to reflect the fact that it wasn't actually a list of Optifine Alternatives, since it only accounted for performance-enhancing mods, and not other Optifine features (e.g Shaders and graphical customizations).

Better Beds might fit well in this list. It's available for Fabric 1.16+.

It does, but I think EBE is about to supersede its functionality in its next update. Unless there are any advantages to Better Beds I'm unaware of.

Edit: Also, if there's one more suggestion I could make, could you add RandomPatches (Forge 1.12-1.16/Fabric 1.15-1.16) to the list? It's got a bunch of bugfixes and additionally replaces DataFixerSlayer's functionality, with every change it makes (DFU killing included) being toggleable in its configuration file.

I will think about adding it, I'm not sure if I should add it, it adds a lot of other things and could be confusing as this option is not enabled by default. Thanks for the suggestion!

Maybe reorder the mods from new to old instead of old to new
also maybe add https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/player-has-moved-too-fast-server-warning-fix-patch as this issue dont really effect performance but the effect of the issue might be recived as lag from the players standpoint

Other mods that might fit or not
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/bobby
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/dynamic-fps
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/resolutioncontrol
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/smoke-suppression

https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/proper-mobcap-modifier-fabric
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/fat-experience-orbs Has 1.17 Version
These mods are all 1.17 and maybe under

Better Biome Blend has Versions 1.17, 1.16 and 1.12.2

I've also used https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/tick-dynamic with mixed success 1.12.2
Also think LagGoggles could have a good place here as a tool to find lag and fix it
Couple of 1.12.2 mods
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/unloader
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/texfix
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/born-in-a-barn
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/mtqfix

By reordering from new->old, you mean changing the order of the sections?
Thanks for the suggestions! Will add some of them when I have the time to edit the list.

PHMTFSWFP ¹
Bobby - Will add, thanks
DynamicFPS/FPSReducer - they're good tweak mods, but since they don't improve performance, not sure if I should add them.
Resolution Control and Smoke Suppression - will add, thanks!
Fabric per Player Spawns/Proper Mobcap - Maybe
Fat Experience Orbs - Will add the 1.17, thanks

BBB - Will add the other versions, thanks.
Tick Dynamic - Maybe
LagGoggles/Lag Detection Tools - I'm probably going to add a new section (Like the same way I made the Chunk Pre-gen one)

1.12
Unloader - has been broken for quite some time, it requires some config tweaks, otherwise it won't work.
TexFix - already on the list ;)
Born in a Barn - will add, thanks!
MTQFix - fixes a bug that doesn't affect performance¹

¹ Maybe I should make a "Bug Fixes" list 🤷

Yes i mean new to old.
Oh i didnt know Unloader is kinda broken but its MIT so you could fix it and just upload a fork .
Well DynamicFPS and FPSReducer both helps on low end systems like my system they help my system run better so increases my pc performance when playing minecraft so i can enjoy things on the side like music netflix etc.
MTQFix dont really fix a performance issue but from the users end it feels like lag
Oh didnt see TexFix on the list also TexFix works with FoamFix if you disable dynamicItemModels.
that all lad :D

I would like you to add a specific sodium that is actively and diligently maintained. It brings 1.16.5 stutters down by about 30% especially during load. It does a lot of preloading near player without much gpu or cpu overhead. https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/sodium-reforged Its not just a hackneyed copy.

It does not seem to add or cause problems with any mod but is not compitable with optifine (Duh)

This is not a mod, this is an application. Also, it is built on Linux Ubuntu, ergo its user base is limited for now. I just wanted to say the concept is great, but I am not sure how much its usages is actually helpful. I can see the application of file compression, though.

What, how do you figure?! It does not have any impact like that, is just makes fonts nicer and uses more ram for font processing ... it is not an optimization mod. Also, it seems to go back and forth with issues between refined storage and ftb utilities. During testing, it uses about 250Mb more ram. That also very much depends on the quality of fonts you choose.

add:

* memoryleakfix https://github.com/fxmorin/memoryLeakFix

* carpet-fixes https://github.com/fxmorin/carpet-fixes
  • MemoryLeakFix: I'd prefer that someone/myself tested those 'memory leaks', a few things about this mod sparked some red flags to me.

FoamFix 1.8.9 is useless. It works great in 1.12 though!

I'd imagine that it does less than its newer/updated versions, since it's so old, maybe that is why it seems 'useless'
If you bring a few profilers comparing a new instance of minecraft 1.8.9 with, and without foamfix, and showed that it indeed does nothing, I'd happily remove it from the list.

Under the Fabric 1.17.x table, Canvas is listed as having "Unknown" incompatibilities, despite being listed as having Sodium as an incompatibility in the "Fabric 1.16.x" table.

What feature does bedrodium break?

In the description of the mod, It stops rendering the entirety of the void-facing side of bedrock. My own experience shows no performance improvement, even though I have an weak computer that uses older integrated graphics. void-facing bedrock is seen sometimes when making void platforms or on certain skyblock maps. Seeing as this mod offers no noticeable performance improvement, I just don't think it should be on the list considering that it breaks rendering for an often used feature.

Removed Bedrodium, thanks!

Tic-Tacs is abandoned, but if you're on 1.16 I'd still recommend you to use it, C2ME is a bit unstable.
With both I would be cautious and backup the saves frequently;
When I used to run a server, I used to use Starlight + Tic-Tacs + Lithium, I believe this is also the recommended combination for C2ME

Re Halogen:
This seems like a big issue, since I believe one of the goals of Sodium, and probably by extension, Halogen, is vanilla parity.
That being said, Halogen shouldn't mess with worldgen (Server-side), since it messes with mostly client-side things.
Make sure you're on the latest version, if you are, I'd recommend you to open an issue on the halogen repo.

Re Performant:
Performant is a incompatibility feast, it is filled with Overwrites and Redirects, two of the most incompatible Mixins; You also can see issues with mobs' AIs, performant breaks those.
There is also places where they simply skip/throttle ticks.

Also, deleting the forge main developer issue about them replacing some forge tick method that other mods might depend on, is a big red flag to me;

There are many more bizarre-ish issues revolving performant and its "performance improvements", but I couldn't cover all of them in this single comment 😛

I think this is a very good idea, as people could create PR's and issues for mods, and you could also use something like mkdocs for creating the site, and it would make the transition much easier as it already uses markdown. I would suggest separating each mod loader into it's own page, and then having all of the MC versions as sub-pages as a potential organisation idea.

1 - Added as "Dangerous", thanks!
2 - This port currently only fixes a few vanilla bugs and implements some crash/stacktrace utils
3 - Having an optifine really controversial "improvement" seems unnecessary, and quoting the author "this mod should never have the chance to be in a modpack, ever"

SeedQueue/Moonlight: A mod which optimizes stronghold generation by offsetting it to a separate thread Chunk Mod: A mod that allows the player to join during world generation

1 - Has no release and description says WIP, will wait until the author publicly releases it
2 - About this one and Ksyxis (They technically do the same thing), I will talk with some people with more experience in worldgen than me, but from what I see, they just delay the chunk generation, and the player will just have to load them later.

EntityCulling (1.3.0 for forge 1.16) seems to be incompatible with Create (0.3.2f)

Minecart contraptions wander off the rails they are placed on, still following the shape of the rails, but a few blocks off. If you stay nearby it doesn't happen, but if you unload the chunks and come back (or exit the world and load back in) the minecart contraptions appear off by a few blocks. It's not just visual, the contraptions will interact with blocks that it shouldn't be if it were following the correct path.

Normal minecarts still work fine.

I am using performant as well if that makes a difference, but performant isn't listed as incompatible with either mod & I haven't noticed problems with it.

Rendering more chunks is always laggier than rendering less chunks, because they have to be loaded into memory. FarPlaneTwo is definitely not a performance mod.

For render distances greater than or equal to 16, there is no difference in spawning behavior. (say I switch from 32 to 16 chunks then enable Fp2)

It is a legitimate use, as that is what I use it and similar mods for.
Along with that, people will be doing the same thing with simulation distance in 1.18.

alkyaly commented Nov 6, 2021

The whole point of ksyxis is delaying chunk generation allowing you access the world sooner. I have been using it and have really appreciated it. It seems like with c2me and starlight it is nearly impossible to notice the difference when you get in, but it takes far less time to get into the world itself.

It may be a nice util mod, but I'm not really sure how well this would fit into this list, I've been avoiding mods that disable things for """performance gain"""

If that mod is available for 1.16 forge, then the list is out of date, as there is only one 1.16 forge entity culling listed.

Fixed, thanks

Lod Mods, while yes technically decrease preformance, they allow people who have low specs to enjoy much greater render distances.

Given that, I believe they fit the spirit of this list.

Until porkchop can write tools that don't require loading the chunk normally, it's not "technically" decreasing performance, it's absolutely costing performance. In every case. And it's labeled dangerous not because of world corruption concerns, but because it can fail in enough situations where you'd need to restart Minecraft in order to get it working again. I just had this happen yesterday, and I'm actually unsure if it's due to a change in performance mods or if I changed dimensions at some point in my playthrough resulting in the mod losing access to its files.

It would really help if people actually read the FAQ of pre-alpha mods and respected the wishes of developers.
