Recent feedback for YaST

End of year 2020 survey

General announcement in the mailing list

I got early access to all the individual answers. Things I see mentioned several times:

  • About the installation:
    • Quite some people say it should be simpler
    • Most concrete complaints are about how hard is to setup the storage and the WiFi.
  • In a running system:
    • Main complaint by far: how bad YaST integrates with the DEs. Duplication of the settings offered by each desktop and YaST. Poorly integrated and not-so-useful control center.
    • People would like to see a better relationship between YaST and NetworkManager.
    • Quite some mentions to how outdated and ugly YaST looks, specially with bigger resolutions and even worst with 4k.
    • Lack of integration with Wayland and polkit is also mentioned.

Tumbleweed review on Linux Unplugged

Mailing list thread

The podcast itself (review starts at 38:40)

  • The reviewer is working on a Dell system with 4k screen resolution. Things are tiny and very hard to click
  • Setup of WIFI during installation "is really old school" as one has to jump between different tabs to set it up. And, finally, the WIFI setting is not taken over to the installed system
  • There was some confusion around the activation of online repositories during installation from DVD. It is unclear where it is used or necessary for.
  • In general the YaST Software management was seen as quite old style ("like we did it 7/8 years ago").
