This is a list of data sources for watchdog reporting on Trump, from Aaron Williams and Steven Rich's SRCCON 2017 session Practical approaches for creating software to cover democracy

The questions that accompany this:

  • How to get data? (script, FOIA, etc)
  • How would you get the data into shape?
  • What reporting would you need to do?
  • What's the story?

Know how you want your data to output. If you're tracking soemthing over time, add it into a spreadsheet or database. If it's time-dependent, send an email, maybe.

Ugly code is okay.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box on data sources.

You don't always need code.

Use your newsroom and your reporters. They're there for a reason.

The data may not be in one place.

If possible, open-soruce your tools and your data.
