Funny how half the Internet is using this patch and yet nobody noticed that lines 590 and 599 will never work (and cause quite a juicy output on dmesg) because remove_proc_subtree() removes subtree starting at name from directory given as second parameter. It is thus impossible to remove nvidia from ... nvidia because nvidia does not exist in ... well ... nvidia.

Had people followed the standard NVIDIA procedure of patching the .run file from the outside (via the, IIRC, --apply-patch flag), the problem would've immediately become apparent as nvidia-installer builds, installs and then removes the module -- which would've highlighted the error (a) and (b) prevented you from subsequently starting X11 anyway.
