Our records have recently shown that you may be hosting a domain with us which will need to have its glue records re-pointed to our new name server IP addresses prior to June 27th. These glue records are hosted with your registrar, and thus cannot be updated or modified from our end. After June 27th, any glue records which remain pointed to our old name server IP addresses will result in an interruption of your DNS service. The list of new IP addresses your glue records will need to point to are included below:
- ns1.linode.com: 162.159.27.72
- ns2.linode.com: 162.159.24.39
- ns3.linode.com: 162.159.25.129
- ns4.linode.com: 162.159.26.99
- ns5.linode.com: 162.159.24.25
This change will force all DNS queries to be directed through CloudFlare. On June 27th, our DNS infrastructure will cease to answer DNS queries which are received on our old name server IP addresses. This upcoming change is the final step in a recent series of efforts to engineer a more resilient DNS service. The new architecture will isolate our authoritative name servers behind an edge layer, which will handle all contact with public traffic. Our old name server IP addresses will continue to be available at this edge layer to process zone transfers, but queries will need to be directed to our new name server IP addresses, which carry requests over the CloudFlare network.
We would also like to take this opportunity to mention that configuring glue records to point directly to our name server IP addresses is not recommended and not supported. The reason for this is that the IP addresses of our infrastructure are subject to change without notice; we rely on DNS hostnames to ensure that our users are always connecting to the correct service. The recommended and supported fashion of configuring your domain to host DNS with Linode is outlined in our documentation (https://www.linode.com/docs/networking/dns/dns-manager-overview#set-domain-names-to-use-linodes-name-servers).
If you have any additional questions or concerns regarding this upcoming change, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
