I've been running QuoteBot for nearly four years now, and to be honest, I’m tired. Due to some recent health complications and major life events, I’ve decided this is the end of the line for QuoteBot.
While QuoteBot is one of the best things I’ve ever done, it’s time to sunset it. Here’s some reasons I’ve decided to let it go:
- QuoteBot is not the same small bot it once was, it needs larger servers to run off. These servers cost nearly $20 USD per month. At the moment, I need to keep as much money as possible
- You might’ve noticed you can’t add QuoteBot to any more servers. This is because Discord have blocked QuoteBot’s verification, and they aren’t accepting my ID to continue verifying QuoteBot
- The support server doesn’t really do much any more, I rarely get people joining, and it’s even rarer people message
- It’s just not a fun or interesting project any more
While I’m sad to see the end of this, I feel it’s time to move on with my life, and I’m grateful for everything that came from it. The experience of learning to market, web design, meeting lots of new cool people and learning lots of new things is something you can’t buy <3
I will looking into releasing source code for QuoteBot. However, there are some complications to doing that. Watch this space for further information.
Chances are by time you're reading this, the server will be archived. If you have any questions about QuoteBot, or you want to get any avatars or data that was uploaded to QuoteBot, please email me using (quotebot at obscure dot blog)
I'll be keeping a database of everything, just in case someone deletes a drawing and QuoteBot retains the last copy. All the messages QuoteBot sent will remain in discord.
To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a direct alternative to QuoteBot that exists in discord. Of course, you can use Demirramon's generator which is what QuoteBot ran off. At the moment, I am considering open sourcing QuoteBot, but that will take some time. It's possible that a slimmed down version may be released, but the logistics of this are complex.
You might know I track some statistics on QuoteBot, here are the numbers shortly after shutdown on 23/08/2024 :
- Total servers: 4,810
- Total messages quoted: 110,331
QuoteBot was made public on March 2nd, 2021. The bot was shutdown for good on 21/08/2024, giving it a total running time of 1,268 days.
Honestly, I'm not sure. I'll be looking into how I'm going to make the source code avaliable, but right now, there's a lot going on in my life, and I'm not well. In an ideal world, I'll be better soon, and making more stuff.
Not to get all emotional, but this has been an amazing experience, it's a shame it had to end. Maybe some day in the future, we'll meet again, maybe Discord will make a more open bot system, maybe a new chat app will take over, or Discord might take steps to make running bots cheaper.
