  • Congratulations on installing AOE2HD on a Mac!

Enhancements (optional)

Updating

In the event of an update, the game will break and you won't be able to see other games.

  • Right click the game in Steam and select "Properties"
  • Go to the "Local Files" tab and click "Verify integrity of game files"
  • Once finished, complete the step where you rename the file again

I'm also getting the same error message jod244. I can't figure out what's causing it. I'm able to connect to servers on windows with no issues. I've noticed when using playonmac it keeps defaulting to wine version 2.12 and I can't change it. Is yours doing the same?

If you are developers or even if you just want to see this project finished soon, help develop it or share it! openage is the way! A clone of the Age of Empires II Genie Engine for UNIX https://github.com/SFTtech/openage.
It runs on my mac but it’s in a very early stage, so it’s not possible to play it (many things are missing, you can check them in the GitHub issues section).

Another way is to download and use SheepShaver. An open source PPC Apple Macintosh emulator. You can install Mac OS (up to 9.0.4) in it and play the original (and beautiful) Age of Empires II Gold Edition. Personally I’m using this method, waiting for openage to be completely developed.

When I try to run steam on playonmac, I get an error message:

Steam crashed.
Select its shortcut and click on "Debug" in the side panel to get more details.

Eventually, ignoring the error I can get to steam, but the library (or anything else) won't load.

Any ideas on how to solve the problem?

FraGoTe, yes, that is exactly the issue we are all having since Steam updated. Yeah, here's what I did:

Download the Desktop App for Steam (For Mac) then buy and download the game using that. This gets the Game added to your Steam Account. Then, quit that App and use FraGoTe's command line above to open the game directly from the Terminal (via PlayOnMac).

The Steam Desktop App seems to display the Library and Store just fine, it is only when used with PlayOnMac that we get the Black Screen of Death - at least, that's what I am finding. So, that's why I did all my buying and downloading in the Desktop App first.

Hope that helps.

Inside your Application Folder there is a folder called Utilities. Terminal.app is inside there. Once you have it open keep it in your dock for next time.

Sorry, you're right, I lost my mind a little there. ;)

Thinking it through, when you open the PlayOnMac version of Steam, it should connect to your Steam account and load up all your games, as long as those have been purchased using the Desktop App. It obviously is much harder to trouble-shoot all this now we have Black Screen of Death. It might need someone with a much more thorough grasp of the issues than me to find a solution.

Have you been through all the options that you are able to access in the PlayOnMac Steam, settings and so on? You need to ensure you're logged into the same Steam account and then see if you can Sync your games with a command somehow.

The point with the Terminal workaround is that it should open AoE directly, without having to press anything within Steam. So, it gets around the Steam Black Screen issue. You do need to have AoE installed and so on before it works, but after that, it should just bypass PlayOnMac and Steam and open AoE (the Terminal solution does use PlayOnMac and Steam, but it opens those in the background for you, then AoE opens by itself, bypassing the Black Screen issue).

Figured out we need to be running Steam in Wine in 64bit to run AOE now.

So you need a new virtual drive on PlayOnMac, for steam 64bit, should be possible from this link:
https://www.playonmac.com/en/app-3430-Steam_x64.html

Then, add the argument for ministeam again (wine steam.exe -no-browser +open steam://open/minigameslist)

Run steam, right click install from the games list, then follow the Finishing/Starting the Game instructions above.

Sadly, couldn't get it to work for definitive edition (Steam shows Running... but doesn't launch), but hopefully should work for HD.

@smithynumber2 - AOEII - HD Version is not available in Europe, only AOEII (2013) which I think is different, and I haven't tried this or seen anyone post about it. So you could try and see, but fyi it'd be a risk. Let us know if you do anyway ;)

@contra if you have the chance, can you please make sure this gist gets updated so other folks can enjoy the game? Here's my Gist with the new setup 😸

Here's what worked for me:

AOE2HD - For Mac OSX

  • I followed the steps on this tutorial up until the end of Installing Steam.
  • At this point, if you try to open Steam you will end up with an empty library and no data will load on the application, aka the black screen of death.
  • Follow these steps:
    • go to Steam on PlayOnMac
    • Click on configure
    • in the 'general' tab, go down to the arguments
    • type wine steam.exe -no-browser +open steam://open/minigameslist
    • mini version of Steam should boot
  • Install the game on the mini version of Steam.
  • After the game installs, go back to the original instructions of the installation for Starting Game:
    • Right click Age of Empires II HD in the mini version of Steam
    • Click the "Properties" option
    • Click the "Set launch options" button
    • Type in NoStartUp and click OK
    • Click the Local Files tab, and then click the "Browse local files" button to open the game files folder
    • Delete Launcher.exe
    • Rename AoK HD.exe to Launcher.exe
    • In Steam, click "Play" for Age of Empires

When you try to load the game, you will get stuck on the Validating Subscriptions screen.

Screen Shot 2020-03-11 at 22 12 30

Using the terminal, type the following (without $):

$ Library/PlayOnMac/wineprefix/Steam/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Age2HD
$ open ~ Launcher.exe

Note: This path is different from the comments left by other folks (comment 1, comment 2), so make sure you play around with the contents of your PlayOnMac directory.

At this point, Steam will load. A pop-up appears with a Critical Error message (see below):

Screen Shot 2020-03-11 at 22 15 05

It reads SteamAPI_RestartAppIfNecessary() has been triggered. Aborting startup.

  • Click "OK", the Steam Login screen shows up.
  • I log in with your credentials...
  • And the game loads! 🎉

Have fun, folks! 😸

@rayana Glad you got it working! Most people with issues are running Catalina though, which AFAIK is still unsolved since PlayOnMac (and its underlying libraries) are still being updated for Catalina. I'll update the instructions once the Catalina fix is out, and may need to have two sets of instructions (for high sierra + catalina).

Hey, anyone know if the Catalina issue is also present on Mojave? Or would the @rayana solution work with that?

This forum suggests Mojave will still be okay, so I will hold off updating for a while! https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-16558-macOS_Catalina_When_will_PlayOnMac_be_ready.html

I have a problem since my PlayOnMac doesn't even start up. I have updated both my homebrew and PlayOnMac to be on the latest version. Anyone experiencing the same issue?

I am running OS Catalina

I have read about it but saw someone managed to get a workaround quite recently. I thought that was for Catalina as well. Hope this will get sorted at some point soon.

Hi All - does @rayana instruction work for definitive edition on Mojave? I’m getting the black screen of death (no library load) so cant access the game to install.

Also, I’m running a 2013 MacBook Air so am not sure if it can handle the HD version properly.

Thoughts?

Hi All,
I have managed to install the game on Steam following the guide. I can also play by myself.
The thing is nothing except the games installed are loading. I cannot see the shop nor friends, community etc...
I've noticed that Steam actually is offline, when I click on the button "Go offline" it says that I am already offline. Hence I cannot play online with my friends, buy games on Steam, chat with people etc.
I have tried several things from what I have read on forums such as putting the argument "-no-cef-sandbox" or clearing my cache and reloading or reinstalling Steam. Nothing works so far.
Anyone having this issue ?

Hi All,

thank you for this guide. Sadly, I still haven't been able to install the game. I can't Steam even in the mini version. So basically even after including the argument that rayana has suggested I still get this message: "Error in main. Steam crashed. Select its shortcut and click on "Debug" in the side panel to get more details."

What could I be doing wrong? I have Mojave 10.14.6 on a macbook air.

I still haven't bought the game since I cannot access steam in playonmac. I imagine that that is not the problem though.

Thank you for your answers! Being able to play this game would make my quarantine a lot easier :D

Hi all,

I have problems installing AOE II HD.

My OS is High Sierra 10.13.6, I purchased the game via steam and I made steam running on my mac. However, when I open the game on steam, the "Install" button is not highlighted in blue. Therefore I cannot click on it.

Can anyone tell me what this is about or how I can install it?

I would be deeply grateful for help on that.

I'm trying to install Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition through PlayonMac. I followed the steps above, except that I installed the 64bit version of Steam (https://www.playonmac.com/en/app-3430-Steam_x64.html). I think I got the game to install by doing the mini Steam version (wine steam.exe -no-browser +open steam://open/minigameslist).

Now I am trying to run the game, but running into an error pop-up message. Anyone know what to do after this step to get it working? Error says: An error occurred while updating Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition (app running): 259)

Hello everyone. I am no developer or "techie" but following the instructions by rayana and contra I was able to install AOE II. There is one exception for me: I was able to get the game playing by double-clicking on Launcher.exe when accessed through "Browse local file" by right-clicking on 'Age of Empires II (2013)' and selecting 'Properties'.. Hopefully this may help others.

I am having problems with installing AoE II: DE. When Steam opens in the mini version, and I then right-click and select "install" I get an error message saying "An error occurred while updating Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition (invalid platform)" underneath in the same message box I see "See the Steam support site for more information".

Could someone please help me / instruct me on what to do to get the AOE2: DE expansion installed.

Oh by the way I am using macOS Sierra 10.12.6

I would greatly appreciate it.

One love,
Brandon

Thank you @rayana!
Following your instructions worked on my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016) on Mojave (10.14.6).
I followed up to deleting / replacing the launcher and then it just worked (no need to go further).
Note: I didn't try without replacing launcher, so if anyone else is reading this it might be worth a shot just in case.
