Pollen alergens reporting system for Google Pollen API

Google Pollen API: Universal Pollen Index (UPI) Reference

Date: 2025-05-07

Summary

The Universal Pollen Index (UPI) is a globally unified system by Google’s Pollen API that quantifies pollen concentration levels for different plant types: Tree, Grass, and Weed.

Index Scale (Per Allergen Type)

Value Label Description
0 None No detectable pollen
1 Very Low Negligible pollen exposure
2 Low Minor levels, may affect sensitive users
3 Moderate Noticeable to allergy sufferers
4 High Likely to cause symptoms
5 Very High Severe exposure risk

Note: The 0–5 scale applies independently per allergen type (e.g., TREE, GRASS, WEED). So each plant category has its own UPI ranging from 0 to 5.

Example Supported Plants

Type Plant Name Code
Tree Oak OAK
Tree Cypress Pine CYPRESS_PINE
Grass Grasses (general) GRAMINALES
Weed Ragweed RAGWEED
Weed Mugwort MUGWORT

API Features

  • Heatmap tiles available per plant type
  • Supports location-specific querying
  • Provides UPI data globally (coverage varies)
