Upgrade PostgreSQL 9.6.5 to 10.0 using Homebrew (macOS)
After automatically updating Postgres to 10.0 via Homebrew, the pg_ctl start command didn't work.
The error was "The data directory was initialized by PostgreSQL version 9.6, which is not compatible with this version 10.0."
Database files have to be updated before starting the server, here are the steps that had to be followed:
# need to have both 9.6.x and latest 10.0 installed, and keep 10.0 as default
brew unlink postgresql
brew install postgresql@9.6
brew unlink postgresql@9.6
brew link postgresql

What to do when your ubuntu distro is End-of-Life

Let's say you're using Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail, released in April 2013) and it just went End-of-Life on you, because it's supported for only 6 months, and the deprecated packages are taken down after 12 months.

You'll probably figure this out the hard way. When you run sudo apt-get update, it will eventually report these errors:

Err http://security.ubuntu.com raring-security/main Sources

A long long time ago, I learnt jQuery and made these notes. They used to be helpful in the earliest days when I was still getting used to programming the web.

Introduction

The following two do the same thing:

$(document).ready(function() {});
$(function() {});

This demonstrates that you can configure a Flask application through Flask-Script, without having to create a Flask instance or deal with circular dependencies. Note that Flask-Script's Manager accepts a factory function in place of a Flask app object.

Running:

python manage.py runserver

gives "Hello, world!" on http://localhost:5000/, while running:

python manage.py -c development.cfg runserver

Performance of Flask, Tornado, GEvent, and their combinations

Wensheng Wang, 10/1/11

Source: http://blog.wensheng.org/2011/10/performance-of-flask-tornado-gevent-and.html

When choosing a web framework, I pretty much have eyes set on Tornado. But I heard good things about Flask and Gevent. So I tested the performance of each and combinations of the three. I chose something just a little more advanced than a "Hello World" program to write - one that use templates. Here are the codes:

1, Pure Flask (pure_flask.py)

OCR on OS X with tesseract

Install ImageMagick for image conversion:

brew install imagemagick

Install tesseract for OCR:

brew install tesseract --all-languages

Or install without --all-languages and install them manually as needed.
