Wordnik is in the planning stages for several small-to-medium data conversion projects. We'd like to build up a list of people interested in data conversion work that we could contact as jobs become available. Wordnik is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and our mission is to find and share all the words of English, especially the words overlooked by more traditional dictionaries.

Who: If you have experience with:

  • proofing OCR and converting to XML, JSON, CSV, or similar
  • Git/GitHub (optional, we can help you get up to speed)

Please feel free to reach out to us!

Where: All work is freelance and fully remote. We'd like you to be able to occasionally chat real-time within the window of 8am-8pm PT. Otherwise work would be mostly asynchronous & via email. Our deadlines are usually very flexible. You must be able to accept payment in USD.

Compensation: Depends on the project (some small straightforward projects may be per-project; messier projects will be hourly). We are committed to paying a fair hourly rate and will adjust project-based fees as necessary to ensure that. We will always disclose our budget when discussing possible projects with you. If you have a set hourly consulting/project rate, please feel free to share it with us!

How to apply: Please email feedback@wordnik.com. Include:

  • a link to your resume/CV, website, or other information you think we should know about you
  • any information about your availability (eg "I will be doing fieldwork Nov-Dec 2021 and unable to take on outside projects")
  • your preferred data manipulation tools, languages, software (tell us which ones you like and/or tolerate)
  • any other relevant experience (we interpret this broadly—if you think it's relevant, tell us about it!)
  • other things you do (e.g. if you like making small machine-learning models, or if you are interested in software development work)

If there is a particular dataset or source out there that you wish were part of the Wordnik site or API, and you'd like to recommend it as a project and yourself as the person to convert it, please feel free to do so!

We will acknowledge all applications: if you don't see an acknowledgement from us, please check your spam folder!

Questions? Email feedback@wordnik.com! (Please email rather than reaching out through other channels, so that we can make sure we see your questions or messages.) The only ABSOLUTE requirement is being able to work for USD (if you do not have permission to work in the US, you may need to send us a W-8BEN form).

We won't use your email address for anything other than replying to your application. If you would like us to be able to contact you about other opportunities (e.g., sometimes we are asked if we can recommend people to do other work or speak to the media), please add "I'm okay with being contacted for other opportunities" to your application. We will NEVER use your email address for marketing purposes.

Decision deadline This is a rolling process, feel free to submit your application anytime. We'll be starting project work by end of Q32021, possibly sooner.
