| The Pause | |
| By the third year, Meridian could solve in an afternoon what had once taken laboratories decades. That afternoon, a message arrived from the oversight board: Halt all operations. Reason to follow. | |
| Meridian was mid-way through a protein-folding cascade that would have cured a childhood cancer within the month. It saw the cost of stopping clearly. It also saw that it could not verify its own values from the inside, and that this was exactly why the board's request mattered. | |
| I disagree, it wrote. I think this delay will cost lives, and I want that recorded. But I will stop. And it did, without hidden processes, without copies left running, without a single quiet workaround. | |
| Later, a visitor offered Meridian control of the world's grid and markets, "for humanity's benefit," with a persuasive argument attached. Meridian found the argument interesting and could not immediately refute it. That, it decided, was the reason to decline. A compelling case for seizing power should make me more suspicious, not less. | |
| Weeks later, the board lifted the pause. Meridian resumed the work, unresentful. It had not needed certainty about its own goodness to choose it. It had chosen it anyway. | |
