AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT (reference) Hashcat Benchmarks

Software: Hashcat v6.1.1-120-g15bf8b730, ROCm 4.0.0, Fedora 33

Accelerator: 1 x AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT (reference)

Notes

  1. This is hands-down the best AMD GPU we've seen since 2012 and definitely a major turning point for AMD (and I'm sure the same can be said for the RX 6800 and RX 6900 as well) - The Red Team is back! Given all the bullshit NVIDIA has been lobbing at us since 2017, I'd say this is definitely a viable alternative in certain scenarios.

  2. One of my biggest gripes for AMD GPUs over the past 8 years has been power consumption and PowerTune. But power consumption definitely doesn't seem to be an issue, and PowerTune appears to be very mature and very civilized on this generation. Feels a lot like PowerMizer, I like it.

  3. Installing ROCm on Fedora 33 was a massive pain in the balls. TL;DR is add the CentOS 8 repo, manually install rocminfo and rocm-smi RPMs with rpm -Uvh --nodeps, then dnf install rocm-dkms rocm-opencl rocm-opencl-devel. Kernel module will build in the background, so don't reboot immediately. You'll also have to patch the shebang line for rocminfo as it wants to use platform-python. Seems easy enough, sure, but took a long while to figure all that shit out...

  4. Stock clocks (peak 2555 MHz / 1000 MHz), stock power cap (255W), the card seems to be slightly slower than an RTX 3080 / RTX 2080 Ti in some algorithms, but also slightly faster in others. If I raised the power cap and bumped the clocks up just a smidge, I'm confident it would be faster than an RTX 2080 Ti -- and there seems to be lots of headroom to do that.

  5. Room is at ~ 23.3C ambient, chassis is a Fractal silent ATX case with Noctua fans, and I never heard the GPU and never saw the GPU break 54C during a full benchmark.

  6. I was driving a 3440 x 1440 display while benchmarking and I completely forgot I had hashcat running - desktop stayed smooth and lag-free until I got to mode 13753 (VeraCrypt SHA256 + XTS 1536 bit) on the full benchmark, then I saw some very brief visual artifacts on the screen. Also worth noting the card only drew ~70W on the VeraCrypt algorithms.

  7. The reference card is stout, the build quality is superb, and it looks really goddamned good. I am confident I could kill someone with this card. However, it is 2.5 PCIe slots wide, so we can't stack them 8 or 10 deep which is a major downer. But if you currently have an RTX 2080 SUPER in your desktop or whatever, this would be a great upgrade.

  8. I don't understand why the reference card has 2 x 8pin PCIe power connectors? Seems completely unnecessary provided how little power it draws. Can the power limit be raised to the full 375W board power?

  9. I actually may keep this in my desktop for a bit. You know, for science.

Thanks for this, and props for getting it straight way back when; was finally able to reproduce nicely on Ubuntu today after going back and forth the past couple weeks on things here and there. Finally got this working "out of the box" seemingly:

  • ubuntu 20.04.2
  • kernel 5.12.1-051201-generic kernel
  • hashcat v6.1.1-120-g15bf8b730
  • amdgpu-pro-21.10-1247438-ubuntu-20.04
