She recently graduated from USC with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and since then has worked at Meta (where she contributed to the development of PlayTorch, an open-source software that aims to democratize the use of AI) and is now prepping for a role at IndieBloom, a software company focused on helping neurodivergent people accomplish their daily goals with less stress (love that!!! ) Zoe loves learning the technical foundations and ethical implications of AI by reading about how models are trained and applying this knowledge to areas of personal intrigue. I hoped this wouldn’t be too much of an issue given that my purpose was to teach it to sound like Luce, not learn new information. For my first test case, I looked at the most recent newsletter in my inbox and used its actual date, subject, and “In Today’s Edish” bullet points as a prompt. Although Luce’s version was undeniably more fun to read (and had accurate information as opposed to making up stories like GPT), I was impressed by the results. I’ve used ChatGPT a lot over the last few months, and the style of this output was very different from what it usually produces. The model clearly learned the structure of the newsletter and how to properly insert and format links, images, and tweets.
This Untangled newsletter discusses several AI-related topics, including: a recent essay arguing AI alignment is a myth; whether algorithmic methods can support reparations (a recent paper suggests it's possible but requires societal, not just technological, innovation); AI's limitations in abstract reasoning and its tendency to "hallucinate"; ChatGPT's failure of a Turing Test; the role of AI in democratizing governance; and the resurgence of the "Church of Artificial Intelligence". However, the AI quickly ran into problems, claiming to be a real priest, offering sacraments, and making factually inaccurate statements (e.g., that Gatorade could be used for baptism). The app was swiftly taken down, and "Father Justin" was demoted to a "lay theologian." The author finds the situation humorous but uses it to question what people seek in religion (meaning, embodiment, community) and how easily enthusiasm for new technology can outweigh careful consideration of potential downsides.
What do people look for in church/religion/faith? I think, a sense of meaning, embodiment, community, a deep anchoring in something… real. In which case, an app-mediated conversation with an AI priest (so, disembodied, solitary, literally unreal) seems completely at odds with everything those questing for the faith it is ostensibly promoting might be looking for. So why did no one notice this at the outset? Because, as Catholic Answers noted, they got overly excited about a new, well-hyped technology — as, indeed, many of us have been time and again— and wanted to find a way to leverage it without thinking of the downsides.
What could go wrong?! (Catholic Answers/Screenshot) One thing I’ve been following from a chuckling distance recently: the saga of Father Justin, AI “priest.” Quick backstory: Catholic Answers , a long-running organization dedicated to “sharing, explaining, and defending the Catholic faith,” announced last Monday that it was releasing an interactive AI app to leverage the power of large language models (LLMs) “to create an engaging and informative experience for those exploring the Catholic faith.” Users could back-and-forth with a 3D animated character named “Father Justin” — a grey-bearded fellow in cassock and clerical collar, perched on a bench in Assisi, Italy — who would helpfully answer questions about Catholicism with data from Catholic Answers’ library of podcasts, articles, and apologetics. Naturally, things went a little haywire and Father Justin was “defrocked” two days later. Apparently the AI claimed to be a real priest, said that he had been ordained by a living bishop, offered at least one user the sacrament of confession, and told another that he could perform marriages as well. The lines that broke me, from an article at Futurism magazine: Our exchanges with Father Justin were touch-and-go because the chatbot only took questions via microphone, and often misunderstood them, such as a query about Israel and Palestine to which it puzzlingly asserted that it was "real.

If we provide beings with an eventual capacity for rationality with moral status (babies), does that imply that the current gen of AIs should have moral status?
Have now heard from several people that they are using AIs as decision-makers in their workflow — AIs seem to have graduated from being useful as powerful tools to scaffolding and executing their own work processes (see AutoGPT , GoalGPT). Humans continue to move further away from the core of work, increasingly outsourcing physical and cognitive aspects of output-oriented activities: from executers to implementers to supervisors, to auditors & rubber-stampers. Until the 1970s, we enhanced our bodies capabilities to work harder : Packy writes: “The history of human progress up until the 1970s was largely about enhancing our bodies’ capabilities, using new power sources, methods, and materials to create more physical things more quickly and cheaply. This allowed humans to be more productive. In the past 50 years, we’ve focused on enhancing our brain capabilities to work smarter : “The past fifty years’ progress has primarily been about enhancing our brains’ capabilities, using new computers, algorithms, and modes of communication to create more digital things and connect over 4 billion people to the internet.” In the next 50 years, we’ll outsource our brain capabilities to a form of collective intelligence so we can work… less ?

Ethics “ All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights ,” starts the body of the pamphlet. This section doesn’t have anything particularly new, go and read it if you want a reminder of the dangers of AI bias and why we should avoid it. Education “ This undertaking must be reflected in a commitment to education, developing specific curricula that span different disciplines in the humanities .” The article’s most insightful point falls in this section — it identifies the elderly as a major group in need of continued education programs. As a millennial, I can barely keep up with the rate of technological progress, and we have all witnessed countless parents and grandparents fall behind. Those that do not understand the technology will increasingly not be able to protect themselves from manipulation.
From words to code I, and my colleagues, can happily sign this pledge, and make us feel better about our work, but it won’t change impact nor trajectory. The piece focuses on how people working in the field should feel and plan their work, but not how they implement it. Time and time again, humans have shown they will make incremental, selfish decisions for profit and prestige . As a practitioner in AI, I know this specific document will do nothing. What would be a better approach, or the next approach, to translate some of these words and ideals into code and products?

Helped me understand a lot more about cancel culture and the trans agenda, namely: People fear what they don’t understand, and doubly so if they’ve been hurt by it before. JK uses women’s rights as a shield against trans folx partly due to her sexual abuse trauma history. Empathizing with supposedly ‘hateful’ folks is the best way to understand where they are coming from, and help lead them out. Shaming them for ignorance just makes it worse.
