We have Virgin internet, their router is underpowered and can't handle sending data across the network (probably same problem for other providers, they all use very cheap hardware). We pay for 350Mbps and were getting about 60Mbps. After improving the setup we get a minimum of 370Mbps, sometimes +400Mbps!
The router is actually doing three things:
- Modem
- Router
- WiFi Access point
We made ours work better by buying a separate router and WiFi access point.
You plug all three things together with cat6 ethernet cable and then put the virgin router into 'Modem mode'. Keep the router near the modem, and put the WiFi access point in the middle of your house if you can, it's powered by the ethernet cable so doesnt need power too. Our is on the ceiling under our stairs which run down middle of the house.
Each device needs a little setting up but not much:
- Virgin (or provider box): Needs to be switched into modem mode
- Router: run the setup wizard, plug your computer directly into it with ethernet cable to set up
- Wifi access point: There is a phone app you can use to set it up, you basically only need to set up the network name and password
