What would be a reliable method to measure the difference between "CPU Cores" ?
I assume not every core offers the same performance cross-provider...

Is there a benchmark tool that runs over a long period of time (a week?) and emulates realistic workloads?
(Doing a 1 hour burst of of math doesn't seem representative).

Maybe something smilar to RAM can be done as well?
I wouldn't be surprised if a portion the RAM you're getting is actually being swaped by the hypervisor.

@vanhecke: One could take the results from cpubenchmark.com, most hosters already guarantee a specific score for theirs.

What about $ per GB for exceeding transfer? DO seems to cost $0.02 / GB for outbound.

@jrasanen DigitalOcean doesn't actually enforce their BW cap right now. Things I'd like to see: virtualization type (if applicable) -- OpenVZ vs. KVM vs. etc. CPU speed, HDD/SSD IO. Based on my testing so far LightSail performanced terribly on CPU and SSD speeds.

Nice recap, thanks!
I see there are some dedicated too, if so OVH has plenty of other very cheap options sold through their sub-brands:

In case you didn't know ;)

you can use https://github.com/Crowd9/Benchmark or https://serverscope.io/ to benchmark your servers (i've never used the latter though).

it's a shame serverbear.com was shut down a few months ago :'(

Can arubacloud.com be added? At the moment they provide VPS starting from 1 Euro (likely marketing). Nevertheless the company is pretty old, at least in terms of presence as web hosting provider.

OVH offers unlimited traffic on their VPS options. https://www.ovh.com/us/vps/vps-ssd.xml lists "Bandwidth - 100 Mbps - Unlimited traffic" Right now you have it as "10TB" in the table.

E: While other sources do say that speed does drop after the 10TB mark, that is different from a "real" cap. Perhaps attach an asterisk?

@queer: All of the listed providers offer "unlimited traffic", but I list the traffic you get at the advertised speed, as the speed after the traffic limit is heavily throttled, and differs from day to day even at many of them.

@dareenzo: Digital Ocean is already in the lists (as "DO").
Also, you can see when it has been updated by clicking on "Revisions". Last change is: "justjanne revised this gist on Aug 3." (2017).

@justjanne Thoughts on moving this into a repo instead of just a Gist? If you did, then people could submit pull requests 😄

@jpinnix: I’ve thought about that, but as all the links lead here, that’d be suboptimal. Luckily, gist is just backed by a git repo anyway, so if you fork it, I can merge your commits back into here.
