Project Reflection

What is one thing that went unusually well during this project?

I was concerned that we were moving along a little too slowly at first, but then all of a sudden things came together. I was impressed with our ability to meet deadlines and help each other out when we got stuck. In this remote world I was expecting it to be harder, but after a few days it actually became pretty easy.

Project Reflection

What is one thing that went unusually well during this project?

I was surprised how often we were able to help each other troubleshoot problems. I thought it would be really hard being remote, but turns out it wasn't hard, screen sharing was easy, and if someone was struggling we all (Tony especially) was like... "Hey, share your screen, let's check it out!"

Mike's Story

I always knew I would go to Florida State Univeristy, but I had no idea what I was going to do. A year and a half in, I decided my calling was to become a research scientist and graduated with a degree in Biochemistry. When I realized it was time to either get a job or go back to school, I instead decided it was time to take a break! During this break I was offered a job at my local bicycle shop. I was hanging out there all the time anyways, so when the owner asked me if he should just start paying me I gladly accepted. I got to talk to customers, be engaged in the bike community, be outside, be active, learn to be a mechanic, ride and live bikes. As it turns out, not only was my new life better than going to school, but was I really good a bikes and reatil.

A few years later I was still working at the shop, but had graduated from changing flat tires and carrying boxes, and was now the lead salesperson and store manager. Things were great, but it was time for a life change and my gir

DTR: Define the Relationship Use this template when conducting DTR with your project partners. It's recommended that you copy/paste this template into your own gist each time you conduct a DTR to take notes on the conversation.

Guiding Questions to Define The Relationship:

  • What are each of our learning goals for this project? What drives us in this project?

Tony: expand knowledge of rails by looking at others' code, learning to write rails in group environment Mike: learn more about rails and get more comfy, try to focus on group and not run away with project Jesse: more learning/understanding/application, making sure group goes smoothly

  • What is your collaboration style? How do you feel about pair programming vs. divide-and-conquer approaches?

What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you?

I don't even remember where I heard it or how I know this, but I have always heard people say things like, "You can be the smartest person alive and have the best idea ever, but if you can't talk to people nobody will ever hear it." The conversation piece was always about how communication is so important, how getting people to listen, and "selling" yourself or your idea is just as important as the idea itself.

In my own life, empathy (and a strong work ethic in all aspects of life) has allowed me to be successful in my retail career, make friends, have a wonderful relationship with my wife, and be a great dog-dad to my dogs. I have had employees tell me they did extra stuff for "our team" and that "we were in this together." I've made strong relationships with my customers and co-workers and been greeted back by customers over 10 years after leaving my first job in Florida.

Personally, I have been fortunate to not only have empathy t
