char-rnn cooking recipes

do androids dream of cooking?

The following recipes are sampled from a trained neural net. You can find the repo to train your own neural net here: https://github.com/karpathy/char-rnn Thanks to Andrej Karpathy for the great code! It's really easy to setup.

The recipes I used for training the char-rnn are from a recipe collection called ffts.com And here is the actual zipped data (uncompressed ~35 MB) I used for training. The ZIP is also archived @ archive.org in case the original links becomes invalid in the future.

It seems to be in a format intended to be read by a program called Meal-Master, therefore you will see those lines repeated all over:

Note, that the generated recipes below are of course no real recipes you want to cook, the ingredients don't match up with the cooking descriptions, however they sometimes overlap coincidental ;)

Whats interesting is to note is, that the neural net returns some nice bogus titles, categories and sometimes even bogus creators of the recipe at the end. have fun cooking (ha..)!

@optroodt It's probably too late now, but I saw your comment just now. I think, I actually went for the defaults for this one. I tried it with 3 layers and a bigger network size some time later. But from a subjective point of view it did not substantially improve the results to the default network size.

This is awesome. And recursive: I found the link to here while looking for a large recipe dataset to feed into char-rnn! One thing I find really interesting is that the RNN learns the structure of the recipe quickly, but does not learn that ingredients are never repeated. Less surprising that the method bears no relation to the ingredients. I wonder if increasing the seq_length will help... I'm giving that a try. My gfx card has 3G ram and I'm tweaking the seq_length and rnn_size to try and fit it in... currently trying size of 350 and seq of 300 is using 2.8G. jcjohnson torch-rnn is much smaller and faster, but I have not had great results with it (probably a user issue!) so char_rnn first!

Hi Tom, thank you for your explanation. I think it's really helpful and it's rare to find experiments so well explained. The dataset you shared is really good and complete.
I have tried it because I found interesting and I've used this RNN with LSTM https://github.com/sherjilozair/char-rnn-tensorflow . I trained it with the dataset in a model with 2 layers and a sequence length of 65, for 50 epochs until a train loss of about 0.8 with a learning rate of 0.97. The model learned to associate words but I can't generate a complete recipe, with the correct ingredients quantities and a sensible procedure. Indeed, when I run the sample.py with an empty prime text, I get something like this

Sorry for the delay!
I am afraid it's been quite some time since I ran the experiment and I can't remember the exact parameters.
You may want to try increasing the sequence length even further, perhaps between 200 and 250, but this is just a wild guess.

My thoughts were a bit like that, when experimenting with sequence length:

The header above each recipe (MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05) has quite a few characters but serves no content purpose other than being a separator. But it is still important to make room to train them, in order to be able generating actual separate recipes.

Therefore a first approach when determining the sequence length could be to have atleast as many characters as a header (51), then also add a the mean length of the title/category/yield header (~100). On top of that experiment a bit.
This would yield to a sequence length of 150+x. It might be a bit too much. But I recommend training at that number and see if you get more coherently separated recipes.

Now that I think of it, instead of leaving MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05 all over the place, the efficiency could probably improved by replacing that line with a uniqe UTF-8 character that is not used anywhere else in the document. It would still work as a textual landmark(?) but not requiring as many valuable characters in a row.
