The forefather, 'John Stenton Workman'

As quoted by a Canterbury Writer who happened to meet him - "He is a grand old sea-king, whom Charles Kingsley would have loved to describe; open-faced, frank of speach, stately in bearing and honest as the day. If his story could be written it would make a book of strange adventure and eventful life."

The Workman Family tree has splintered many times over in the last century and many a branch has been lost or forgotten. By introducing the the man who made his way to New Zealand from his homeland Scotland and his 'Princess', Kokoroiti Rewhanga, we can potentially glue this broken history back together.

Born in Biggar, South Lanarkshire in Scotland on 12th Jannuary 1817, John 'Stanton' Workman made his way to New Zealand at the age of 17 by boat (the "William Stoveled", fitted out for sperm whaling) via Sydney with his Uncle. They landed in Kororareka (now Russell) and traded muskets and tabacco and blankets. During this time the first 2 horses were brought to New Zealand from Sydney and being a young and knwoledgable rider, John was pitted against another young ship-hand to race the horses down the beach. John Workman won the first ever equine race held in Aotearoa.

There are many missing pieces to this Workman family history. A few links have been made on John and Kokoroiti's son Williams branch, via his marriage to Mary Ann Silcox and their ninth son (of eleven), Robert Workman. But the rest of the tree remains elusive.

Also tracing the whakapapa of Kokoroiti Rewhanga has been notoriously difficult due to the lack of records noted, retained and passed down through the generations.
