Are we XLibre yet?

X11 has been, and still is, a vital piece of technology at the core of professional Unix-like workstations since decades. It has a proven track record of supporting enterprise-grade applications with long-term protocol stability and platform compatibility. It has matured over decades. XLibre is an actively developed fork of the X.Org X11 server, initiated by the most active X.Org developer and supported by the open source community.

An incompatible alternative, Wayland, is being aggressively pushed by IBM = Red Hat = Gnome = Fedora = freedesktop.org. However, it is not ready to succeed X11 as it its governance model leads to never-ending discussions and prevents even the most essential functionality from existing. Think twice before abandoning Xorg. Wayland breaks everything!

It is time that the open source community reclaims what was ours to begin with. This page lists distributions supporting XLibre so that you can make an informed choice.

Also, Not all of us neurodivergent people want the shiny new broken toy to play with either. Some of us like sanity in practice of software, and the shiny new thing doesn't abude by that.
Shiny new toy is aggravating to use. Shiny new toy doesn't work right. Shiny new toy gets things wrong.
So, why would someone like me who is neurodivergent want something that is going to make my brain destabilize itself because everything doesn't work as intended?

what distro do you use then ? Debian LTS? Is this to me it look boring 🤣 for me i need the new shiny stuff ... like you see everyone on the spectrum is different, as it is a vast spectrum 🌈 ♾️. I use Arch With Hyprland BTW ! But i do still want to support XLibre cause I do agree and want to support freedom of choice. GNU + Linux is supposed to be about choice not dictatorship.

I use Arch with Xlibre and Xfce BTW. 😏

Trivia: I installed the devuan_excalibur_6.0-preview-2025-05-24_1235_amd64_desktop-live.iso onto a persistent stick and the Vendor info refers to "The X.Org Foundation".. Is this going to be changed at some point?

Anyway, I was able to set up everything on both Artix and Devuan. I wonder how long they'll be able to maintain init. e.g. Mx seems to be backing off from maintaining their shim.

Also, Re: Arch bleeding edge - I wish they'd make the latest mainline kernel version available, well, at least I don't think they do? Building the kernel is kind of impractical.

You should be using the Devuan's latest version (their version of Jessie), not the stable.

Arch's mainline is not exactly bleeding edge. It does get some testing for regressions and other instability problems.

Arch's testing branch is bleeding edge and can be dangerous to use.

e.g. I don't see 6.16-rc5 in binary form on any of the Arch repos..? point is, I don't see any of the rc's.

ubuntu has "daily" kernel updates available in binary form, not just the rc's. They can be dangerous (or expensive), any software/hardware can be. For several months (recently) snapd would cause my core temps to rise significantly with no remedy other than to disable it; and this was the production version. I could write the same thing about picom or kwin, but to a lesser extent than snapd, but, they too have exhibited run-away behavior that pushed the core(s) to higher temps.

excalibur is their development version??- but, yeah the 5/24 stamp is too soon, I should have realized. I guess there's Ceres (sid), but, I think the devuan XLibre announcement referred to excalibur, I forget where it is now. But, Jessie is the oldest version available.. So, really, the only distro (w/XLibre) available is Artix.

Linux-next, and all relevant packages, are in the AUR I believe. Personally, I prefer the Zen kernel. Next is kinda weird at times.

And this is why Debian/Devuan confuses me. Sid, Jessie... Ugh... Just called each branch stable, testing, and experimental.

That's for sure.. Liquorix is my goto. I uninstalled rc5 as a matter of fact as it was spamming the journal with all kinds of junk, assembly code and whatnot; it's been reported. They're supposed to make a formal release pretty soon.

who want to join me into making a window manager for xlibre ?

There are plenty of window managers for X11 (thus XLibre). I've been using Linux and FreeBSD for 20 years. For the most of that time, I used [and still am] JWM (Joe's Window Manager). I just don't need the unnecessary bloat of today's "desktop environments". But that's my personal preference.

If Jeremy Bicha is in a database, he'll be found.

As far as Debian and Gnome... yes, nice to know who is representing them. Someone with a high level of moral authority...

Did you look at the x.com link? He included an image of his source, which would appear to be a DM from a representative of Canonical. Anything can be faked these days, but Lunduke has been around a very long time and has never been seen to do such a thing in past, and Canonical would surely deny it if it were not true....

I'm happy to presume it's true, since if it's not, that would be far bigger news, and I'd hear about it very quickly.

Maybe there's a genetic component to it that's also linked to this particular look?
