2024-08-20 Interview with Oleksandr Syrski re: missile and drone interception rates

Syrskyi disclosed how many missiles and drones the enemy used in total, how many were intercepted, and how many objects were hit

The published data on the effectiveness of Ukrainian air defense covers the entire period since February 24, 2022

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, during his report at the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, revealed extremely interesting data regarding Russia's use of long-range weapons for strikes against Ukraine. These were broken down by types of missiles and drones, specifying the number launched and intercepted, as well as the number and type of objects hit.

According to the report, the enemy used 9,627 missiles and 13,997 drones for strikes against Ukraine, of which a total of 2,429 missiles and 9,272 drones were intercepted since February 24, 2022. In total, 11,879 objects were hit over the entire period, of which the majority were civilian - 6,203, and military - 5,676.

The statistics also allow us to trace the overall effectiveness of Russian long-range weapons throughout the entire period. Although these statistics are indeed general due to the rather significant period, which includes times when Ukraine relied only on Soviet-era systems, experienced an acute shortage of anti-aircraft missiles, and was just setting up air defense to protect against long-range kamikaze drones.

In any case, the interception efficiency for cruise missiles such as Kalibr, Kh-555/101, and R-500 for the Iskander OTRK was 66.62%. For guided missiles Kh-59, Kh-35, Kh-31, and other similar ones - 22.02%. The difference in interception of these two similar types of targets is explained by the fact that guided missiles are usually launched by the enemy at frontline or border objects, where it is not possible to echelon air defense assets.

Regarding drones, Shahed-136 was combined with "Lancets" in the statistics, with a total figure for this group of 13,315 units launched and 8,836 units intercepted - 63.36%. Another 682 with 436 shot down are in the category of other drones.

For ballistic missiles of the Iskander OTRK, Tochka-U, and KN-23 produced by North Korea, a total of 1,368 units were used by the enemy, of which only 4.53% were intercepted. To these should be added anti-aircraft missiles from the S-300 and S-400 air defense systems, of which 3,008 units were fired, and only 0.63% were intercepted. With these missiles, the enemy hit a total of 4,293 objects, of which 3,196 were civilian and 1,097 were military.

Among the enemy missiles that require modern complexes for interception are the Kh-22 and Kh-32, which are used with Tu-22M3. A total of 362 were launched and 2 were shot down, i.e., 0.55%. The enemy used 211 high-speed "Onyx" missiles, of which 12 were intercepted - 5.69%.

In the hypersonic weapons category: The so-called "Aerospace Forces" of the Russian Federation used the Kh-47M2 "Kinzhal" 111 times, of which 28 were intercepted - 25.23%. Moreover, these missiles were mostly aimed at civilian infrastructure, with only 15 military targets out of 83 objects hit. The truly hypersonic "Zircon" was used only 6 times, 2 times it was intercepted, 4 times it hit civilian objects.
