An update on Sergey Surovikin

URA.RU Learns About Surovikin's Special Mission: The Most Famous Feats of the General

URA.RU publishes new photos of Surovikin on a special mission

General of the Army "Armageddon" Sergey Surovikin is currently on a special mission in Africa, where he represents Russia's interests. This was reported to URA.RU by an acquaintance of the general. Details about Surovikin's new mission and position, as well as the story of his military feats, are covered in the agency's material.

Surovikin's Operations

1991 Coup

After the collapse of the USSR and the removal of President Mikhail Gorbachev from office, Defense Minister Dmitry Yazov ordered tanks and a motorized rifle division into Moscow. One of the battalions was commanded by 25-year-old Surovikin.

August Coup of 1991

On the night of August 21, Surovikin, along with a column of military vehicles, moved through a tunnel on the Garden Ring to establish command posts there. In this tunnel, protesters blocked the convoy and threw Molotov cocktails. One of the vehicles caught fire, injuring six soldiers. Surovikin tried to break through the blockade, resulting in the death of three people.

As a result of this incident, the battalion commander was sent to a detention facility and spent almost four months there. In December, he was released on a personal order from the first President of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin.

Service in Tajikistan

During the 1998 confrontation with militants in Tajikistan, Surovikin, commanding a regiment, directed forces to rescue civilians from mudflows (water-saturated soil). The military traveled to the disaster site in tanks, but the vehicles could not overcome the natural flows. Surovikin led the column, taking over the lead tank, and forced a crossing through the obstacle. As a result, the regiment reached the civilians and saved 55 adults and 34 children. After this operation, many of the participants were found to have hypothermia, with some hospitalized.

When militants from Afghanistan broke into Tajikistan in 1999, Surovikin took command of a reconnaissance company and blocked the enemy with five combat vehicles, forcing them to surrender.

During his service in this country, Surovikin progressed from battalion commander to chief of staff and commander of the Guards motorized rifle regiment. He also became the chief of staff of the Gatchina Motorized Rifle Division.

Chechen Operation

In 2004, Surovikin commanded the main group of the Russian Defense Ministry in Chechnya. After intercepting communications from militants planning an attack on a populated area, the general gathered an operational staff and used artillery to strike the enemy's position, preventing their attack. Later, when militants attacked an armored personnel carrier escorting Surovikin and other members of the operational staff, he saved the crew of the damaged, burning vehicle despite being concussed.

During one of the militants' attacks, the general lost nine soldiers. At that time, he promised: "For every killed Russian soldier, the army will kill three militants."

Service in Syria

In March 2017, Surovikin commanded the Russian military group in Syria. During the conflict in this country, he gained the nickname "General Armageddon." Under his leadership, the Syrian army, with Russian support, took control of part of the country's territories, and instead of three months, he remained in the position for nine. Later that year, Surovikin was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces.

In 2021, Surovikin became an Army General, the highest military rank for a Russian officer.

Special Military Operation (SMO)

After the start of the special military operation in Ukraine, Surovikin was put in charge of the "South" military group, and later became head of the entire United Group of Forces (UGF). He was the one who announced the withdrawal of Russian troops from Kherson.

At the end of 2022, President Vladimir Putin awarded Surovikin the Order of St. George, third class. A few days later, he was removed from his position and appointed deputy commander of Valery Gerasimov's troops.

During the mutiny of the Wagner PMC led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, Surovikin negotiated with the mercenaries. At that time, he released a video in which, holding a machine gun, he called on them to stop. After that, the general disappeared from the public eye.

Rumors of Detention and Being in Custody

Due to the general's disappearance from public view, Western media began to publish reports that Surovikin had allegedly been detained for his connection with the mutineers. Information about Surovikin's detention was circulated in Russian media as well.

Military correspondent Vladimir Romanov claimed that Surovikin was allegedly in custody in Moscow's Lefortovo detention center. In his Telegram channel, Romanov reported that Surovikin had been "taken" as early as June 25, 2023. Romanov also mentioned the arrest of Colonel General Andrey Yudin. Later, Yudin denied these rumors and stated that he was at home, on vacation.

Rumors of a Secret Meeting in the Kremlin and New Position

In May, information appeared that Surovikin had allegedly been seen in the Kremlin. This was published by military blogger Mikhail Zvinchuk in the Telegram channel "Rybar." Journalist Vladimir Solovyov refuted this rumor, saying that the general was in Algeria (Africa).

In September 2024, this information was confirmed by "Kommersant." Surovikin is in the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria with a delegation from the Russian Defense Ministry. The publication, citing a source, noted that Russia's military and political leadership places great importance on foreign policy in the East, and Surovikin is there as a trusted figure. The source added that the general could be appointed to a new position to implement policies in that direction.

Special Mission

A source personally familiar with Surovikin told URA.RU that the general is on a special mission. In Africa, "General Armageddon" represents Russia's interests.
