Nix on macOS Catalina

Nix on macOS Catalina

I'm writing this gist for my own records but it might help someone else too.

Installing Nix

Support for Catalina has improved a lot since the update was first rolled out.

Note: See the NixOS manual for discussion of the --darwin-use-unencrypted-nix-store-volume option.

I've been working with Apache Kafka for over 7 years. I inevitably find myself doing the same set of activities while I'm developing or working with someone else's system. Here's a set of Kafka productivity hacks for doing a few things way faster than you're probably doing them now. 🔥

Alpakka Kafka connector (akka-stream-kafka) example. Produce and consumer kafka messages using Akka Stream.

Alpakka Kafka connector (akka-stream-kafka) example

Simple solution to use Alpakka Kafka connector to produce and consume kafka messages.

I assume that you have 2 scala apps, a producer and a consumer.

How to Reset Kafka Consumer Group Offset

Kafka 0.11.0.0 (Confluent 3.3.0) added support to manipulate offsets for a consumer group via cli kafka-consumer-groups command.

  1. List the topics to which the group is subscribed
kafka-consumer-groups --bootstrap-server <kafkahost:port> --group <group_id> --describe

Note the values under "CURRENT-OFFSET" and "LOG-END-OFFSET". "CURRENT-OFFSET" is the offset where this consumer group is currently at in each of the partitions.

  1. Reset the consumer offset for a topic (preview)

Story: Writing Scripts with Go

Story: Writing Scripts with Go

This is a story about how I tried to use Go for scripting. In this story, I’ll discuss the need for a Go script, how we would expect it to behave and the possible implementations; During the discussion I’ll deep dive to scripts, shells, and shebangs. Finally, we’ll discuss solutions that will make Go scripts work.

Why Go is good for scripting?

While python and bash are popular scripting languages, C, C++ and Java are not used for scripts at all, and some languages are somewhere in between.
