Stream tweaks proposal

The stream is a powerful tool, not just for IO, -- but, in the best Unix tradition -- for composition of modules. I've been connecting streams into quite long chains.

Some streams I have written do not alter the data in the stream, but affect it is some way, such as buffering when the stream is paused. pause-stream

Also, I've been writing high level abstractions that communicate via streams, and do some interesting high level stuff, Such as by replicating data, snob and crdt, or multiplexing mux-demux. Another good example is dnode.

These abstractions expose a stream on their interface, and so can be used over any io channel which supports pipe.

As a maintainer of native node add-on modules I have some questions about when and why NODE_MODULE_VERSION changes:

• does v8 use semver? how do you know when a v8 version breaks ABI compatibilility?
• is there a semantic meaning for v8 version numbers or is it arbitrary?
• who maintains this google doc I found? is it official?
• why is the latest entry from may in the v8 changelog? https://chromium.googlesource.com/v8/v8.git/+/master/ChangeLog
• how can you tell when all these future v8 versions will be stable? https://chromium.googlesource.com/v8/v8.git/+refs
• why must a node major version correspond to a specific v8 version? e.g. node v5 uses v8 4.6 and won't upgrade to 4.7

Min Streams Interface Spec

This spec describes a minimal stream interface meant for protocol implementors. Modules written to the interfaces in this spec can be used by a wide variety of projects. The protocols will not need any extra dependencies themselves. It's just an interface to implement.

Simple Stream

A simple stream is just a function. It represents a pull-stream. It has the following signature:

MDB is unlike most debuggers you've experienced.

It is not a source level debugger like gdb or lldb or even Node's builtin debugger

Generally used for postmortem analysis.

Postmortem is for Production and Development

We operate mostly on core files, though you can attach to running processes as well.

The prep-script.sh will setup the latest Node and install the latest perf version on your Linux box.

When you want to generate the flame graph, run the following (folder locations taken from install script):

Virtual DOM and diffing algorithm

There was a [great article][1] about how react implements it's virtual DOM. There are some really interesting ideas in there but they are deeply buried in the implementation of the React framework.

However, it's possible to implement just the virtual DOM and diff algorithm on it's own as a set of independent modules.
