Tool using LLM is the most promising. By that definition, we already have agents. Almost all of them can generate queries for search. We have systems that can write automation scripts and grab info from external systems. Code assistants can produce diffs to apply. Almost any app with AI can be considered an agent if it can save or retrieve content.

The concept of "Agents" in programming has existed for over a decade. Now, this concept is being applied to LLMs.

You will be happy to know AI agents have existed as a concept since at least 1980 https://stacks.stanford.edu/file/druid:zd294jv9941/zd294jv9941.pdf and is almost certainly older then that.
