// if not, you can test this gist by setting utf8string to the equivalent '->\ud83d\ude03\ud83e\uddd2\ud83c\udffc\u00fc\u010d\u0113<-' | |

nix-channel
and~/.nix-defexpr
are gone. We'll use$NIX_PATH
(or user environment specific overrides configured vianix set-path
) to look up packages. Since$NIX_PATH
supports URLs nowadays, this removes the need for channels: you can just set$NIX_PATH
to e.g.https://nixos.org/channels/nixos-15.09/nixexprs.tar.xz
and stay up to date automatically. -
By default, packages are selected by attribute name, rather than the
name
attribute. Thusnix install hello
is basically equivalent tonix-env -iA hello
. The attribute name is recorded in the user environment manifest and used in upgrades. Thus (at least by default)hello
won't be upgraded tohelloVariant
.@vcunat suggested making this an arbitrary Nix expression rather than an attrpath, e.g.
firefox.override { enableFoo = true; }
. However, such an expression would not have a key in the user environment, unlike an attrpath. Better to require an explicit flag for this.
TBD: How to deal with search path clashes.

I'm writing this post to publicly come out as trans (specifically: I wish to transition to become a woman).
This post won't be as polished or edited as my usual posts, because that's kind of the point: I'm tired of having to edit myself to make myself acceptable to others.
I'm a bit scared to let people know that I'm trans, especially because I'm not yet in a position where I can transition (for reasons I don't want to share, at least not in public) and it's really shameful. However, I'm getting really

My experiments with an XMonad setup in NixOS. This is my work box now, so it pretty much works.
probably needs:
# useradd -m iain
# passwd iain ...
# passwd root ...
