Today i updated my Spotify to version 1.0.72.117.g6bd7cc73 and with the hosts on second post i would not start to login.
So i checked all the host entries and found out that this one was blocking Spotify from start:

So, the new working hosts file (for everyone having the Spotify loading problem) is:

Well, @l3vy23, i noticed the same thing and fixed it by uninstalling, installing version 1.0.66 and added this hosts to block any Spotify auto-updates:

  • 0.0.0.0 upgrade.spotify.com
  • 0.0.0.0 www.spotify-desktop.com
  • 0.0.0.0 sto3-accesspoint-a88.sto3.spotify.net
  • 0.0.0.0 upgrade.scdn.co
  • 0.0.0.0 beta.spotify.map.fastly.net
  • 0.0.0.0 prod.spotify.map.fastlylb.net

Hope this helps.
I've been listening Spotify for about 8 hours today and not a single Ad.

I got success using @pirolito post of host + using a older version of Spotify and blocking the update sites, newest version played ads and sometimes just stop playing music until I restart the app.

I don't know if it's ok to post link but I risk it and downloaded the 1.0.64.399 version from Uptodown (https://spotify.en.uptodown.com/windows/old), it doesn't seem to be anything wrong or fishy with my client, so I'm guessing is legit, feel free to delete the link if it violate any rule or ask me to delete it.

@DarkOverFlow Just by logical thinking. Spotify also uses (video) ad servers with hex prefixes. When I blocked some of them, Spotify started using other servers. So I saw the pattern. Pasted three in an Excel-sheet and let it auto-generate the server list (and that worked). Added also hosts for audio ads but they are non-existent at this time.

edit update at 1:03p cdt - still playing audio ads. it is probably the spclient one that turns off the friends feed that does the streaming of the ads. gonna take a break. lolol. maybe there is a specific port we can block on "127.0.0.1 spclient.wg.spotify.com" that will block ads but not friends list?

Hey, I use a program called Adguard to block Spotify ads and other progams, its like Adblock or Ublock where you can select custom filters but you can assign it to any application on your pc not just a browser, so just assign it to Spotify and it works like a charm for me.

Hope that helps :)

So for the friend list problem. We can't block the entire URL because the list is gone but if we don't we start to let adds in. Now ads and the list cant be on the same port, so we know that there must be at least 2 ports open on spclient.wg.spotify.com. If we do a port scan of the url we find there are many ports open...

PORT STATE SERVICE
25/tcp open smtp
43/tcp open whois
80/tcp open http
110/tcp open pop3
143/tcp open imap
195/tcp open dn6-nlm-aud
443/tcp open https
465/tcp open smtps
587/tcp open submission
700/tcp open epp
993/tcp open imaps
995/tcp open pop3s
1883/tcp open mqtt
3389/tcp open ms-wbt-server
5222/tcp open xmpp-client
5432/tcp open postgresql
5671/tcp open amqps
5672/tcp open amqp
5900/tcp open vnc
5901/tcp open vnc-1
6379/tcp open redis
8080/tcp open http-proxy
8085/tcp open unknown
8099/tcp open unknown
9092/tcp open XmlIpcRegSvc
9200/tcp open wap-wsp
9300/tcp open vrace

We can eliminate a couple of these though because we know their standard ports.
Past that I am unsure, we would need to block each port and slowly test which lets the list through but not the ads.

hey, was the friends issue resolved? because if I don't block the spclient.wg.spotify.com I have video ads and if I the friends and daily mixes don't work, so that sucks

To correct the problem with Artist page and radio you need to remove "127.0.0.1 spclient.wg.spotify.com" from the list, you will get a black banner at the border but without ads.

EDIT: you have audio ads

I also found the "corrupted" line few minutes ago, but didnt noticed any audio ads yet. Is there any reason why this line suddenly bugged out and can we expect a fix for the black bar (and audio ads if they really appear) soon?

Edit: The line is fixed and works properly. No black banner and no audio ads anymore.

I can only speak for myself. I use the list by srtod and only removed the line "127.0.0.1 open.spotify.com", since it used to crash my discord, when joining any music channels, where spotify links are posted. Works flawless.

if i remove spclient.wg.spotify.com from the hosts file and when the ads kick in there will be 30 seconds of silence.. however if i don't remove that line from the hosts file i am not able to add new songs to my playlist. they will be synced to spotify servers so it appears on the web (browser) player but not on the desktop client. im also not able to play new songs (songs that are not already on my playlist) on the desktop app if that line is not removed

anyone knows of a better solution without removing "spclient.wg.spotify.com" line from the hosts file?

edit: the 30 seconds of silence is because i've installed spotifree previously. without spotifree the spotify ads will play with 30 seconds of audio

edit 2: adding back "spclient.wg.spotify.com" to the hosts file and all the issues mentioned above (radio function, playing new songs, adding new songs to playlist etc) is fixed! perhaps removing and adding back fixes everything. using spotify 1.0.92.390.g2ce5ec7d on OS X el capitan.

edit 3: upon further testing removing and adding back "spclient.wg.spotify.com" fixes radio function but im still unable to play new songs, add new songs to playlist from the desktop app.

edit 4: radio function works, but im able to play new songs, add new songs to playlist from the desktop app but it only works for certain songs (about 30%)..

someone has a solution?

The more as I know is about Spotify in this post. If you are Spotify fan, you may know all Spotify free users can play music online, not right to download music or play offline. If you are willing to download or play Spotify music offline on any devices. You can try Spotify Music Converter Windows. It is for you to remove DRM protection and convert Spotify to MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC, M4A, M4B, etc at faster speed with lossless quality.

seems like the spclient.wg.spotify.com is very closely tied to Spotify itself. So I guess we would need to observe the traffic while playing the radio function and see where the ads are coming from. Thats a step, unless its already done.

I turned spclient.wg.spotify.com back on, got to the radio and opened one of the radio stations and spotify indicates that it cannot be started.

Using this host file rigth now and an older version of Spotify (1.0.66.478.g1296534d) with some lines that block the update process.
Just download that version and add this lines, should work without ads and also working friend activity and radio.

i just applied it, and it works great but friend activity does not show. However, audio and banner ads are gone, radio seems to be working, and i can add to my playlist. I will update it if i find a problem.

spotify crashed after trying to use radio the first time but when i relaunched it and tried it again it worked fine. The only problem is the friends bar (I used the text in the comment above)

Up to a few days, using the hosts list of this thread to block spotify ads was working fine. But recently, I started having a lot of songs that were blocked into spotify so I checked my host file and it appears I had to comment the spclient.wg.spotify.com redirection for these songs to play again. But doing so, I also now have audio ads back :( .
So did anyone find a solution to block all ads without blocking access to some songs on the latest version of spotify desktop (windows)?
Else, can anyone put a link to download the last version of spotify that fully worked with the hosts file blocking list? (so that I download it and block the update to the latest version if there is no solution for it for now)

So i'm able to listen to the radio, access friends list, etc, but the only problem with the addresses that I've blocked is that there are some songs I can't play, where the image shows a CD, and there is no name.
image
And this is what the friends bar looks like on mine (not sure entirely if it works, as I have no friends to add)

Hello everyone, I've been trying to remove the ads with the hosts file method but I have several problems.
When I try to install the normal Spotify desktop program (not the one from the Microsoft store) it will automatically change (?) to the Microsoft store version and basically the method @wennaspeedy provided is useless to me.
Now the only thing left is changing the hosts file but I still get problems users such as @butterfuzz have, where certain songs won't play or i cannot add songs to my list.
Anyone can provide an updated hosts list or a different method? Thank you, everyone, for the thread alone!

The only solution for completely remove ads changing the hosts file is to stick with an older version (I suggest 1.0.95.289) and block updates, because in the newest versions if you add "spclient.wg.spotify.com" to the hosts file you block some songs (among other things, radio, social etc.), if you remove "spclient.wg.spotify.com" from hosts file you have ads back, so the only solution for me on Windows for new versions (1.1.0.237) is the one suggested by @wennaspeedy , no ads, all songs playable, radio e social all perfectly working and no need to add anything to the hosts file.

Linux user here. Is there a .deb at a similar version lying around? I installed Spotify with snap on my machine and disabling updates seems to be impossible, so I don't believe rolling back to an older version would work. If there's a chance someone downloaded via the PPA and still has an older version...
That being said Spotify's changed their TOS to ban people using adblockers starting March. So are we screwed anyway?

So did anyone find a solution to block all ads without blocking access to some songs on the latest version of spotify desktop (Linux)?
For now I believe to solve the problem temporarily is comment spclient.wg.spotify.com to load new songs and playlist and uncomment after.
If I find one better solution I will paste here.

If you believe that spotify will ban you, unfortunatly, I recommend one backup of your playlist
[https://soundiiz.com/tutorial/spotify-to-deezer](Link to soundiiz)
You can upload your songs in deezer, and after create one new accont in spotify making the inverse process (If we found some way to block this ads sucefully)

I'm on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I got my .deb from here: http://packages.linuxmint.com/search.php?release=any&section=any&keyword=spotify

Currently using 1.0.92.390.g2ce5ec7d with seemingly no issues with songs not playing (with modified hosts file). I'm going to grab a few more older versions just in case that changes...

It was already mentioned that ads are back.
One workaround working for me in Ubuntu is to close application, clean cache folder and make it unwritable for current user. Of course, we all know side effects of disabling cache.

Hmm, I haven't tried that, however I did notice that after erasing the cache folder, spotify would load everything correctly for some time, until some songs stoped playing. I will try to make the spotify cache folder unwritable and see what happens.

EDIT : Still the best solution for mac users !
PS : i did try the locked and empty cache folder solution but it doesn't work for me

Just FYI, Mac and Windows users should try to delete the spotify cache folder, and denying access to spotify to that folder, it should work on all platforms but people should confirm. I can confirm it works like a charm on linux, and not having a cache folder is unnoticeable. :)

I confirm. And, seemingly, you don't need to care of hosts anymore.
Well, maybe you have to still block banners if they annoy by 0.0.0.0 spclient.wg.spotify.com rule.

I left hosts file as I have had it for a few years when blocking the cache folder. Great find @vushe

Can someone sum up the best-working way please?
Do I need to modify my hosts file AND lock the Cache folder? Where exactly is the cache folder located on a mac?

Thank you guys 👍

Best way is to buy premium subscription. Other ways require your effort.

I was just wondering because I had to wipe my hosts file due to the mentioned problem of songs not playing correctly and now I'm looking for an effort-requiring way to work around this problem.

Well, I can't say anything about Mac or Windows. I'm a proud user of Ubuntu.
Anyway, as @antonvalletas supposed, difference should not be that great. And I'm wondering from where other guys take those long-looooong lists and can they really affect anything...

In a nutshell:

  • Removing 0.0.0.0 spclient.wg.spotify.com from the list of blocked hosts should solve that interruption. But it means that you accept banners from Spotify.
  • If you leave 0.0.0.0 spclient.wg.spotify.com you'll have to regularly clean your cache. In Ubuntu cache folder is in $HOME/.cache/spotify.
  • Another way is to disallow writing in this cache folder to prevent ad cookies. Command (in terminal) should look somewhat like that: chmod -w $HOME/.cache/spotify. If you see some artifacts, run opposite command, i.e. chmod +w $HOME/.cache/spotify. I assume these commands won't work on Windows, but there should be a way, I'm sure.

And, to conclude, all these measures are temporary. As mentioned, subscription to Spotify Premium is the best way to avoid annoying ads.

Still not getting any ads on 1.0.92.390.g2ce5ec7d on Ubuntu with a modified hosts (0.0.0.0 spclient.wg.spotify.com - not commented in hosts file). No blocked songs too.

Didn't disallow writing to cache, only disabled updates. I figured I don't really need anything other than core features so no complaining about the older version.
