Outline :

Open Source is increasingly making the news. With the many business and government bodies that now use open source offerings, it's becoming quite obvious that being free is not the only advantage Open Source Software provides. In this talk, I'll be taking you through the magical realm of the Land known as Open Source. What it is, what it is not and how can you be a part of it.

Talk Structure :

  • Introduction to Open Source (5 mins):
    I'll be talking briefly about what Open Source means and will be debunking common myths regarding Open Source.

  • How Does one Contribute to Open Source (15 mins):

    • Introduction to what Contribution essentially means.
    • Guidelines and etiquettes to be followed while communicating with the Organization.
    • What is the required skillset.
    • Some Do's and Dont's that should be kept in mind.
  • Incentives and Perks of being an Open Source Developer/Contributor (5 mins):

    • Describe program run by various Open Sources Organizations for Students. (GSoC, Outreachy, SOK, etc.)
    • How it helps you become a better programmer.
  • Q/A and Short Demo/Hands on (15 mins) :
    Attendees will be making one contribution to an Open Sourced Organization of their choice. (Laptops will be required)
