Not involved with any fishy crypto fishy business
I'm told that there are people claiming to "tokenize" my git repositories with my approval.
I just want to clarify that that is not the case. I do not believe in monetizing my repositories.
If you believe crypto-currencies are anything but a scam, I have a bridge to sell you.
But I'm not selling source code.

Doesn't matter. You can already setup Github sponsor to custom links.

Ah, I didn't know about this feature mainly because GitHub Sponsors isn't available in my country yet.

And I doubt Microsoft's gonna approve me anyway... I mean, I use Linux. That's probably a red flag for them. Still, it's kinda lame that they haven't added support for my country. It's been over ~3 years now! My application is still in the wait list, which makes using GitHub feel a bit discouraging sometimes.

But hey, screw it. Let's go broke and keep building cool stuff in Rust. Who needs approval when you've got cargo and dreams?

the issue is appropriation, setting up parallel channels that are not official to the actual owners of said repos.

I see! That's a meta thing and it doesn't make any sense to do so for real repos. +1 for Linus response!

@wiseaidev

I am very confused on how you think Microsoft is against Linux? They just (somewhat) open sourced WSL. Not only that, there are plenty of projects that you can only use on Linux that have GitHub sponsors. I don't understand this.

I have actually, however Microsoft has been becoming increasingly more open. Nothing will happen to you. Especally from GitHub where they don't really care what code you post. Its stupidly simple. I will be more than happy to show you github repos that have the sponsors enabled.

Appreciate all the discussion here, and wanted to follow up with a quick update:

We launched GitFish with good intentions but overlooked the point on getting projects' consent. It's a mistake.

Given all the feedback we received, we decided to make things right. So last week (May 29), we announced that we would retire the $LINUX token and use the liquidity from the AMM pool to refund everyone.

Since then, we already refunded 1829 users a total of 5864 SOL in two batches (1 and 2). All refund transactions are fully transparent and on-chain. We've included all refund transaction hash here.

There are still ~19500 SOL remaining, which will be dispatched to the users as soon as we finish data indexing and calculations. Our team isn't keeping a single dollar. All remaining transactions will be uploaded to the same repo once sent. Since it's on-chain, everyone can audit the data.

Going forward, we will only tokenize repos with the repo owner's consent and focus on helping underfunded OSS dev raise funds to sustain their work.

Mr. Torvalds, if you don't sell source codes, how did/do you sustain your life from the beginning of .. kernel development?

Probably this message is not related to the tokenisation or cryptocurrency. Apologies.

... I'm confronting an issue with sustaining life, currently building certain .. useful[?] tiny programs to productise for .. first maintaining this human mortal life till I die (since it's all we're destined at random moment of our lives) and at least contribute in small small ways to human society, parents are getting sick and old, and after resignation from private companies, I was unable to find any places to belong.

Do you have (automatised[?]) infrastructure to provide foods to yourself? ... Otherwise, how do you maintain your life? I maybe somehow share something similar to you. A man and computer, nothing much more required except my cats but at least I need to find a way to provide nutrition to this human body (and my cats).

I've approached you on another social but it seems probably you were busy on your work. (and I understand that you are likely and mostly focused on other various important things, but I guess it's most likely kernel maintenance) I was drunk when I was sending connection invitation on social, so I'm afraid whether I've made a mistake on the invitation letter to you.

I was hesitating whether it would be okay to leave message here or not, but made a decision since our time is limited on this earth... it would be better to leave a message here for messages' arrival on you.

  • Is there any ... something similar to.. developers' council?

Thank you for reading my message and hope you are having a good day. I think this message is already too long here.

This is from the "team":

"When designing the GitFish protocol, we built in a special “pool retirement” mechanism to address the problem of “zombie pools”. A zombie pool is a pool where almost all tokens have been sold back, but some SOL remains locked forever. Retirement allows these funds to be withdrawn, so they can be redistributed to users.

Prior to this announcement, we invoked the retirement mechanism for the $LINUX pool, withdrawing 25,003 SOL to the admin wallet."

They rug pulled 25,000 SOL straightforward.

This thread reminds me of when I had a layover at the airport in New Delhi. There were few places to sit, however I observed a room with many seats open. As I approached the door to the room, I was stopped by two uniformed men who sat behind a table by the door. "30 rupees to enter." [I actually don't remember the amount] I explained I had just turned in the last of my Indian money for dollars. "No dollar, only rupees." So I went back to the pole I had been leaning on. A short while later the two men abruptly stood up and left. So I approached the room again, and another passenger saw the whole thing and came up me and told me that those guys did not work for the airport at all, and the real security people were always chasing them away. So I went into the room and finally sat down.

Of course I also realized that they were probably paying off the real guards to look the other way for a little while, in exchange for a cut of the take, otherwise how could they keep getting back in.

This is ridiculous, I thought NFTs died out 3 years ago, and now they're scamming out Github repos?

This whole thing belongs to https://www.web3isgoinggreat.com
If someone made an crypto pump'n'dump out of my repos (If I had any), I'd seek legal counseling, probably already happened with someone else, since the scammers now seek permission by spamming spammy spammail

Thank you Linus for providing a disclaimer, and if you, dear reader, got an offer by them: don't fall for it, it's more likely to get the 5'000'000€ from the Nigerian prince you got in an email from 2008

To close off this chapter, we’ve now completed full refunds for everyone who participated, and returned ~25k SOL to ~9k users (https://x.com/gitfish/status/1934094603998916932)

All transactions are recorded and auditable: https://github.com/gitfishdev/linux-refund/tree/main/data

The $LINUX token is officially retired.

We randomly chose the hottest subject around for our first scam project. Using other's work and image for visibility and now refunding users in an poor attempt at recovery.

Adding a layer of shit to something that already exist (and works well) is still shit. About sponsor profiles not being accepted in countries unsupported is another question (and one for Shitcrosoft).

Ok this has escalated and surely we just have to stop this however Linus T. (@torvalds) wants and look at the GitFish website and press the info button (This is only for Chrome and Google users) you will see a warn pop-up.Surely all GitFish tokens are virtual malware and GitFish is probably phishing people. If i was Linus T. (@torvalds) i would stop this aswell so @tomviolin and the rest lets stop debating,I have been getting notifs from this gist in the night for SO LONG and i on average now have 5 hours of sleep,Ignore the crashout but lets touch grass for a day,the LINUX token was just a start-up for more controversy,Infact Linus T. indeed open source projects need commercial support
but what the hell is wrong with you you launch token for some project without owner's consent
there are better ways to monetize stuff that have trust from people

I didn't even know that someone "tokenize" github repo. We at https://namefi.io tokenize domains even so it will require domain ownership be put in the control of our system in order tokenize it. Tokenizing non-onchain assets always involves putting the right of control into a "vault". Any other approach that seems to issue token out of thin-air is pure scam.
