:zero: Welcome to this meeting to discuss Drupal Community Governance! This is one of a series of meetings we are holding in this channel to connect people who are interested in governance with each other, provide a forum for people to share their thoughts, and empower the community to determine the next steps. Additional background can be found at: https://www.drupal.org/association/blog/evolving-community-governance-survey-results-and-a-call-to-action

Drupal Code of Conduct
As our community grows, it is imperative that we preserve the things that got us here; namely, keeping Drupal a fun, welcoming, challenging, and fair place to play. The Drupal Code of Conduct (DCOC) states our shared ideals with respect to conduct. Think of this as coding standards for people. It is an expression of our ideals, not a rulebook. It is a way to communicate our existing values to the entire community. This code of conduct is based on the one developed by Ubuntu, with the addition of Show more…

This is the fifth such meeting of this kind in #governance.

Allow me to provide a short summary on how we arrived here…
Over the past year or so, it has become apparent to both community members, the Drupal Association, and Dries that perhaps it is time for the next evolution of Drupal’s governance:

Take the Survey on the Community Governance Summit
I recently shared the community needs and potential strategies for evolving community governance, which resulted from the Community Discussions we held in person and online throughout April and May. You can find the webinar recording and written transcript, as well as the meeting minutes from all Community Discussions, at https://www.drupal.org/community/discussions.

Something that *might* be useful is some of the output of sustainoss.org that happened earlier in the year, looking at sustainability of OS projects. Their definition of sustainability, I think, drives some of what we might mean when we talk about governance. http://sustainoss.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=994ef34534ae1960825544de6&id=0f0b541d5f&e=c2f2e2ea3a and specifically the sections on what we agreed and disagreed upon

A group of volunteers, myself included, decided to organize this meetings to help identify individuals who might be interested in helping out in this rather significant task as well as to generate ideas.

@rachel_norfolk Looking at the link you posted, in the “What do we understand about sustainability?” section, I’m looking at the “things that we agree/disagree on” sections - this is what you’re talking about?
rachel_norfolk
[6:11 AM]
Yes, sorry - I should have just copied it in
ultimike [6:11 AM]
No worries - the notes are quite raw
rachel_norfolk
[6:12 AM]
So, there were representatives of many different Open Source projects there and it was interesting to see what we considered necessary for a project.
[6:12]
And yeah, they are very raw. I understand a more detailed report is forthcoming
ultimike [6:12 AM]
So, I guess we can look at the lists and see how we feel a sampling of the items fit our community.
rachel_norfolk [6:13 AM]
That's what I was thinking - it's not an "answer" but more of a background of what many peopel were saying on related subjects
ultimike [6:13 AM]
For example, in the “things we agree on [that we understand about sustainability]” list, there’s “Mentorship” (low-hanging fruit).
[6:14]
I think there’s a pretty wide consensus in our community that the stronger the mentorship programs we have, the more sustainable we are. (edited)
rachel_norfolk
[6:14 AM]
Yes
ultimike [6:14 AM]
“Conflict resolution” (ahem)
rachel_norfolk
[6:14 AM]
And that churn is to be expected and planned for
ultimike [6:14 AM]
Disclaimer: both @rachel_norfolk and myself are on the CWG.
rachel_norfolk
[6:15 AM]
As it happens, I didn't suggest conflict resolution - but was happy to see it proposed!
ultimike [6:15 AM]
Perhaps the item on the list that is most related to this meeting is “Balance of power”.
[6:16]
@rachel_norfolk You were at this conference?
rachel_norfolk [6:16 AM]
Yes
[6:16]
They invited me over, which was kinda cool!
ultimike [6:16 AM]
Ah - excellent. So, a question for you from the “things that we disagree on” list - I’m not sure what “Outreach to new contributors” is doing there.
rachel_norfolk
[6:18 AM]
The idea was in groups we would work on a set of "requirements" for a sustainable project. Some we agreed on and some we failed to agree they were necessary, though they were proposed or they would not be on the list
[6:18]
I was interested that we *didn't* feel that "common purpose" was a necessity to a sustainable project
[6:19]
Same goes for "No toxic People"
ultimike [6:19 AM]
By “we” are you talking about a simple majority?
rachel_norfolk
[6:19 AM]
yes. Well, it was a bit more freeflow than actual counting hands
ultimike [6:19 AM]
Gotcha.
rachel_norfolk
[6:20 AM]
And there are multiple lists in there
ultimike [6:21 AM]
Was there anything discussed specific to governance that you recall?
rachel_norfolk
[6:21 AM]
Some groups felt good onboarding was more important than others. From memory, I'd say the larger projects felt it was more important
ultimike [6:22 AM]
Sustainability it a big topic - for the sake of this meeting, I think we should narrow the scope to governance as much as possible.
[6:22]
What does it mean to have sustainable governance?
[6:23]
I believe that in a previous meeting (or maybe it was outside an official one of these meetings, but it was in this channel), some folks were discussing how governance could be built to be easily evolved. (edited)
rachel_norfolk
[6:23 AM]
will shut up now.
ultimike [6:24 AM]
@rachel_norfolk What? No! Then I’ll just be talking to myself it seems.
[6:24]
(heh)
rachel_norfolk [6:24 AM]
gotta have my hair cut!
ultimike [6:24 AM]
Ah bummer - ok!
rachel_norfolk [6:25 AM]
I'll have a dig through the rest of the shared notes
ultimike [6:25 AM]
@rachel_norfolk Understood.
