Generation definitions

(From the Federal Reserve)

  • Silent generation and earlier: born before 1946
  • Baby Boomers: born 1946-1964
  • Gen X: born 1965-1980
  • Millennials: born 1981-1996

Data sources

Other notes

  • Uses Q3 wealth data and July 1 population estimates for a given year.
  • Determines population by generation each year by using the current year and then splitting the population of each age into its two possible birth years; i.e., as of July 1, 2000, if 500 people are 1 year old, assume their births were between July 1, 1998 and June 30, 1999, half in 1998 and half in 1999.
