Report Summary Annotation

The primary aim of this annotation project is to write short summaries of specific events. Each example to be annotated will feature a short report text, along with some information about an event described in the report. This event information is specified as a set of annotations based on (a subset of) the FrameNet ontology. As part of writing these summaries, you may also have to correct some of these annotations if they contain errors. The annotation correction and the summary writing will thus be carried out in tandem.

For this project, you will not need to understand FrameNet in great detail before you begin. In a nutshell, FrameNet is an annotation scheme for semantic role labeling (SRL) that covers a wide range of different event and role types. The event types are called frames and they vary in their level of specificity — e.g. from types as specific as Bail_decision to types as general as Activity. Each frame

Overview

In each task, a pair of sentences, one in English (“source”) and one in another (“target”) language will be shown to the user. The English sentence will be shown on the top half of the screen and an automatic translation of the English sentence into the target language will be shown on the bottom half. Both sentences will be segmented into words (“tokenized”). The task is to verify and correct alignments between highlighted spans of English text (each consisting of one or more words) and their translations in the target language. In each English sentence, there will typically be more than one span to align. The user needs to annotate the English spans word by word. By clicking on each English word, a suggested span in the target language, based on an automatic (“default”) alignment between words in the English and target language sentences, is highlighted as the default answer on the target side (bottom of the screen).
