Claude Code v2.1.119/v2.1.120 Survival Checklist: eight regressions filed 2026-04-24, with workarounds and rollback to v2.1.117

Claude Code v2.1.119 / v2.1.120 Survival Checklist (filed 2026-04-24)

Anthropic shipped two patch releases of Claude Code in a 24-hour window. The anthropics/claude-code issue tracker recorded 30+ regression reports on the same day. This Gist summarises the eight that will actively break a working session, with issue numbers, reproductions, and workarounds.

All issues are open at the time of writing (2026-04-25 JST). The shortest possible mitigation is pin to v2.1.117 and disable auto-update until Anthropic ships fixes.

npm uninstall -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code@2.1.117
# Add to ~/.npmrc to prevent silent upgrade:
# @anthropic-ai/claude-code:version=2.1.117

1. claude --resume crashes at startup (v2.1.120)

  • Issue: #53044 / duplicate #53041
  • Symptom: claude --resume throws TypeError: UKH is not a function. REPL's onSessionRestored is undefined.
  • Impact: Session resume is dead. Every resume-centric workflow is broken.
  • Workaround: Roll back to v2.1.117 (see top of Gist).

2. v2.1.119 silently routes claude-opus-4-7 to the 1M-context variant

  • Issue: #53031
  • Symptom: You explicitly picked claude-opus-4-7 (200k). The runtime sends you to claude-opus-4-7[1m] (1M) without notice.
  • Impact: Token pricing and cache behaviour change silently, inflating per-call cost. Long-context retrieval characteristics also shift.
  • Workaround: After /model, always run /status and verify the effective model field. Pin v2.1.117 if you need the 200k tier strictly.

3. Resize-redraw UI duplication regression (v2.1.119)

  • Issue: #53038
  • Symptom: The fix in #49086 has regressed. Resizing the terminal duplicates the UI. Partial inputs render twice and pastes double.
  • Workaround: Ctrl+L after every resize. Or pin v2.1.117.

4. Auto-update stopped working (v2.1.119+)

  • Issue: #53028
  • Symptom: The updater is silent. Old binaries persist.
  • Impact: Security patches and future fixes will not arrive without manual intervention. Given the other items in this list, this is (ironically) the one regression protecting users from the others.
  • Workaround: claude update manually, or npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code@<version>.

5. /mcp menu freezes when --resume is used in WSL2

  • Issue: #53035
  • Symptom: A resumed session in WSL2 cannot open /mcp. The menu stops responding and Ctrl+C does not unwind it.
  • Workaround: Do not use --resume if you need /mcp in the same session. Open a fresh session for MCP operations.

6. CLAUDE.md is ignored even below 1/3 context

  • Issue: #53040
  • Symptom: CLAUDE.md is loaded, but the model does not consult it. The model reasons from scratch and returns wrong answers. Reports occur at context usage well below 33%.
  • Impact: Project conventions, tool inventories, and design policies become invisible. This is one of the most common symptoms in the broader "Claude-lash" cluster since mid-April.
  • Workaround: Explicitly say "read CLAUDE.md again" or paste the relevant section into the prompt. No root-cause fix exists today.

7. sandbox.excludedCommands does not release network enforcement

  • Issue: #53012
  • Symptom: Commands listed in sandbox.excludedCommands remain subject to network enforcement. Reproduced on macOS. Documentation says otherwise.
  • Impact: Tools that do not honour HTTP(S)_PROXY (some CLIs, native binaries) fail. Workflows designed around excludedCommands break.
  • Workaround: Run the affected commands outside the sandbox, or replace them with proxy-aware equivalents.

8. Worktree creation hangs on macOS 26.4

  • Issue: #53015
  • Symptom: worktree creation spawns git merge --ff-only, which blocks reading stdin. The unix socket is never written to, hanging indefinitely. Reproduced on macOS 26.4 / Apple Silicon.
  • Workaround: Avoid worktree flows. Use standard branch switching on affected machines, or run worktree operations on Linux.

Related: HN front-page report — "Claude 4.7 is ignoring stop hooks"

The HN thread Tell HN: Claude 4.7 is ignoring stop hooks reports that stop-family hooks silently fail with exit code 0 and discarded stdout. The consensus in the comments: you must exit 2 and write to stderr. Official docs are thin on this. Hook operators should double-check their exit codes.

Summary

Within 24 hours, v2.1.119 and v2.1.120 together shipped: a retract-grade auto-update break (#53028), a silent model swap (#53031), two separate resume-time crashes (#53041 / #53044), a reintroduced UI-duplication bug (#53038), a WSL2-only /mcp freeze (#53035), a CLAUDE.md-is-ignored regression (#53040), a broken sandbox.excludedCommands promise (#53012), and a macOS worktree hang (#53015).

The cheapest retreat is v2.1.117. Production work should avoid latest immediately after a release and trail by several days until the pattern from #53028 and its siblings clears.

Awesome, thank you. For a non-npm install within WSL2, this works: claude install --force 2.1.117
