All of the above, at various points 5/4/2016 1:02 PM

I have never used Sci-Hub 5/4/2016 12:44 PM

I've only ever paid for individual papers. I would have read many more but I could not afford them, so largely gave up. I wasn't studying at an institution that had access to these journals at the time. I was doing my own research. I don't have access to a library that has access to the papers I wanted to read. The journals themselves have been disrupting the (actual) traditional science industry. I do not use the term "rent-seekers" often or lightly, but the modern journal publishing industry has added nothing to scientific endeavour. In fact it's hampered progress and is responsible for the explosive rise of junk science papers. Integrity left the science publishing industry long ago. That is why Aaron Schwarz did what he did. That's why we have Sci-Hub, and Sci-Hub is why we will have now have progress. Thank you for your story. 5/4/2016 12:43 PM

i did not use any..but i think it should be legal to improve scientific research 5/4/2016 3:51 AM

Convenience, no full access from university, price is astronomical. 5/4/2016 1:53 AM

I don't but it is insanely frustrating to try to get an article when you pay x amount to go to a school and their journal access doesn't even cover your research. 5/3/2016 11:12 PM

Don't use 5/3/2016 10:38 PM

Convenience primarily, but all of above. Elsevier is probably the most rapacious and uncooperative of the scientific publishers, they deserve it. 5/3/2016 9:21 PM

I haven't... but I think the publishers are killing the goose that lays the golden egg by charging too much... people will (and have) found another way. If they made it more affordable, it would be easier for people to just pay it and go on than find a way to steal it. 5/2/2016 3:03 PM

economic reasons, my institution is a public university library and we can not pay the subscription 5/2/2016 2:46 PM

I would assume it is access issues and/or for convenience. Although the article cites the problem of two click searches in Google Scholar. Well it sounds as though you would have to search for the title once, and then go to Sci-Hub. How is that easier? 5/2/2016 2:37 PM

A great deal of the scientific production in the world is fueled by taxpayer taxes. So, it is unreasonable that the knowledge generated back to society through a new bite on earnings, but this time one that will actually feed a science parasite, the publishers. 5/1/2016 11:13 PM

For when institution subscription doesnt cover the article. Also, it gives a better number to researchers about the interest they make in the field with their article. The greater the pirating number, the greater the interest and importance...like GoT! 5/1/2016 11:12 PM

I do not pirate articles but after learning that modern day scientist have to pay that much for papers just to formulate and prove theories is holding science back because of greed. The internet has allowed information to evolve and scientific theories should be free for all to use. Publishing will never change because of the need for scholarly accuracy, but the progress of science does change when you hold theories back because of money greed. 5/1/2016 9:17 PM

I object to paywalls when taxpayers, both individuals and businesses are the primary funders of the moneys directed toward research and publications, so charging us twice for science we sponsor is unconscionable. I generally use arXiv and similar free access sites as I prefer to stay legal, but I love science and engineering. It takes too much for me, a retired AF pilot, to qualify for free access by being enrolled, or paying huge membership fees to get journals. Education has become an instituionalized luxury accessible to individuals with accumulatd wealth. What about those of us at the bottom of the social hierachy? We will never reach heights of sucesss because the institution does not nurture the poor. Education should provide tools, insight, and knowledge to enhance our quality of life. I'd also not say anything if I could get a year's subscription to everything for a few dollars--the actual cost of storing the data. But since Elsevier and other orgs greedily charge anywhere between $10 and $1000 PER PAPER, I say give them the finger. 4/30/2016 5:20 PM

The reviewers get nothing. And then the publishers charges outrageous prices for allowing digital downloads. 4/30/2016 4:39 PM

All of the above plus I believe in public access. 4/30/2016 4:36 PM

This is the first I have heard of Sci-Hub, so I haven't had the opportunity to use it. I am like Rahimi, and am stuck paying the $45 for an article, or go without it. If I had known about Sci-Hub, I probably would have accessed needed scientific works thru it, without guilt.. I have had to pay upwards of $50 for ONE research paper. My payment did not even allow me access to the other articles within the SAME edition as the study of interest I needed. Often relevant editorials, letters, or even other original research studies exist in the same volume as the research study of interest. One must pay, however, to access each article, letter, editorial individually, even when they occur in the same edition of a journal. I believe scientific research NEEDS TO BE accessible to everyone, regardless of their social or financial status...If limitations to access must be endured, it seems more appropriate to enforce responsible use of the information..I have too often been in Rahimi's circumstance, and I see it as EXPLOITATION by the fat cat publishers who, if I am to believe this article, obtain access to the studies free, albeit "illegally", then force the curious investigators/individuals to PAY for the same scientific information!! Granted, pirating is anti-capitalistic.Clearly, however Rahimi (and Mr. Bohannan) have brought to the forefront a complex matter of considerable more controversy, and substance than simply the ethics of piracy. It is, indeed, the question of global access to scientific research. Kudos. 4/30/2016 4:07 PM

DO NOT USE, However predatory practices including price gouging by publishers encourages this, and quite frankly they sort of deserve it. I am professional bound not to use them, but I sympathize with faculty and students being left out to dry. 4/30/2016 4:03 PM

I only use Sci-Hub for the articles that I haven´t access from my university journalst subcriptions. I like to think that Sci-hub is for share the knowledge that is price-retricted, but if my institution have pay for it and support the work of the publishers I'll be rational and take it from both sides in a good way. 4/30/2016 3:59 PM

However, It will take half a day, 1h to to the library, 2h searching, 1h travelling back. And the next day I will realize that I need one article more to read... I can legally download scientific papers, but it will cost me too much time. So why should I go to a library and not using Sci-Hub or some other source? 4/30/2016 1:12 PM

I am retired. I don't have access and can't afford to pay for articles I wish to read to stay in touch with scientific advances. So I get frustrated when I try to learn something and can't get past the abstract. I understand the need for editing and content management, but the cost per article and the difficulty accessing has to change. The part you didn't report on was how much the companies profit from the publishing. If it were a non-profit industry, perhaps it could stimulate scientific advances globally. Controlling the data does not help the earth, nor mankind within it. I do think it is wrong to steal, but I have an objection to the control of scientific information in private hands. 4/30/2016 6:48 AM

This predicament is about lowering extremely high prices so that researchers who need to work with a multitude of sources (which they often do) can do so without jeopardizing their financial situations. 4/29/2016 9:26 PM

I object to the huge profits publishers make on publication of research paid for by the taxpayer. 4/29/2016 3:58 AM

I don't use them as I believe you should contact authors for papers. The authors make a decision about how to license their papers and readers should respect this. If you don't let authors know that you are trying to read their papers and can't get access, then they won't know to choose more open publishers in the future. 4/29/2016 3:51 AM

It is simply false that access to papers here, at the richest and oldest university in Indonesia, is the same as any middling European university. It is so expensive that many, many papers are simply not accessible : only a small part of them. The currency rates exacerbate the problem massively. So what do I do when I just want to access a research paper which I need to at least read for my class? I download them. 30$ per paper or more is bugfuck crazy. That amount of money could be used for 10 days' worth of food (and that's counting thr fact that I'm middle-upper class). It's insane if I'm downloading them in a legal way. 4/29/2016 12:27 AM

My institute simply cannot afford subscription to 75% of the journal papers I routinely read. Also, unlike what publishers think, reading a paper cannot be a one month long project where someone will go through all sorts of hoops before he/she can gain access. Instead, if pricing is rationalized (how about conducting a survey?) I believe most will read papers legally. Why would someone want to geopardize career only for the sake of reading a paper illegally? 4/29/2016 12:26 AM

I don't use pirated material because I have journal access though my library. However, it is critical - perhaps responsible - that all people have access to scientific states and progress. 4/28/2016 6:36 PM

It depends. I may use it because my institution does not have access, or for sheer convenience. The "law of least effort" is one of he few Universal laws applied to the Human being and in practice, Sci-Hub is much more simple to use. I also object to the (large) profits publishers make of academic publishing, because publishing is making it public. It isn't public if you have to pay for it, and the ammount you pay should already be covered when you pay over 2000€ just to publish with the editors basically doing nothing besides changing fonts and adding collumns. I'd like to know why. Is it to keep the servers running and cooled down 24/7? Where and how is the money we pay to publish applied? It is interesting to see that the Cold War isn't over, and this makes me wonder who can really be considered the bad guy. 4/28/2016 6:34 PM

i don't use sci-hub 4/28/2016 6:33 PM

Although my universty has bought some memberships to some publishers they don't let me get all the articles, sometimes they redirect me to other place when I have to pay for the article. And when you need it, you need it. It's that or zero chance on getting access to the latest an best information. 4/28/2016 6:31 PM

I'm lucky enough to have "legitimate access" (ha!) at a large institute, but I will admit that I sometimes actively search for papers not in sci-hub simply to add to the database. It's for the greater good. 4/28/2016 6:27 PM

I object to the profits publishers make off academics; my institution have access to papers, but there are only two computers and access takes a long time, thus making it easier to just access papers from home; I believe that's unjust for authors to pay a fee to make their work free; SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY must become public knowledge! What can make a difference in another's LIFE, must be known - and what are the reasons for blocking Sci-Hub? For PROFIT. For a company's profit. No company should profit by denying access to humanity's knowledge that can save and make a difference in many lifes. 4/28/2016 4:54 PM

I have institutional access to most papers. If I didn't, all of the above reasons would contribute to my use of these methods. Currently, if there's a paper I don't have access to, I don't hesitate to access it illegally, primarily for convenience. I'm not bothered by the profits. I'm bothered by the opacity. The public deserves the science. This lack of access is stunting technological progress, health outcomes, and more. 4/28/2016 3:29 PM
