A Gopher Rising

Inspired by Maya Angelou's Still I Rise

You may walk through my GitHub history,
With it’s non idiomatic and fragal lines,
You may value me less than dirt,
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.
Does my ability to code upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
Cause I walk like I’ve got Golang,
Compiling in my room.
Just like generics in Go,
With the certainty of divide.
Like the hopes of an aspiring developer,
I’ll rise.
Do my ambitions offend you?
Don’t you take it so hard.
Cause I can pretend I’ve no issues,
Being Geordi La Forge so you can be Picard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my appearance upset you?
Does it come as a surprise?
That I get to speak at this conference,
Dressed in this disguise?
Kelsey, it's too early to be so serious.
I know.
Can we talk about something more interesting?
Like what?
Pokemon Go.
I’m a Black Gopher, who else did we bring?
This is bigger than syntax and runtimes,
We’re all human beings.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear,
I rise.
Almost didn’t make it to GopherCon, but I’m glad I’m here,
I rose.
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise.
I rise.
At GopherCon, I becomes We,
And together We rise.
