User Feedback and Iteration

Do my users think the app is interesting or valuable?

  • The basic idea definitely has merit, especially for not-experienced cooks or people who have random ingredients but don’t experiment.
  • People using the Blue Apron-type home-cooking-boxes will sometimes end up with random leftovers, especially sauces and aromatics.
  • Coupled with the caloric breakdown adds benefit for calorie watchers.

Did my users use the app as I intended?

  • To look up recipes based on what’s in my fridge and get a corresponding nutrition count.
  • Answer is yes.

Did my users encounter any bugs or broken features?

  • Is it possible to have the search term box stay on top of the page while the recipes load — so you can refine/add/change as you see what pops up? I couldn’t get back to the box to remind me which ingredients I originally put in for the search terms.

  • Once I put in the ingredients, entries popped up with the list of ingredients, but not the actual recipes included. Only the photo area is clickable — is there a way to make the whole thing clickable, or have a [more] link underneath, or show the source site as a link at the bottom (which I like anyway, since I trust some cooking sites more than others)?

Did my users understand how to use the app? Seems fairly self-explanatory.

Additional comments:

  • There seems to be two types of restrictions -- diet-choice (vegan, keto, paleo, pescatarian, etc) and intolerance/allergy -- but I think it might be useful to separate the two options (like keep an eye out for these keywords but hard pass on these ingredients).

  • Why “Peanut Free” only? What about other allergies/intolerances? Why not include “Gluten Free”, considering how popular it is even among people who don’t have celiac disease? Or no pork or beef for religious reasons? Is there a way to do a series of limiters instead, like NO tree nuts and NO pork?

  • Where are the recipes coming from? And the nutrients breakdown? I personally like to know from where articles are being sourced.

  • Re: the Nutrient Breakdown: Are the numbers shown corresponding to the amount in the recipe, or the general serving size of the ingredient?

  • Is there a way to select and save recipes as you scroll? [stream of consciousness]: I like this but maybe for later, not quite for right now, I want to keep scrolling, but I’ll tick this one for now to save, keep scrolling, ooh that one too, I’ll compare my favourites and choose which I like better for now.
