Upgrade Debian 9, (current WSL) to Debian 12 (bookworm testing)

Upgrade Debian 9 (current WSL) to Debian 12 (bookworm testing)

As of writing, the Debian distro for WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) is quite old.

You can get more up-to-date package managers, text-editors and compilers by upgrading WSL to Debian 12 (current testing).

  • Root required
  • Use at your own risk, preferably on a fresh installation.
  • Choose 'yes' when Debian requests to restart services.

Note: I do not maintain this gist anymore, but people report that it still works. Please check the comments for any revisions or extra things you should take into consideration.

How to Enable HTTP/2 in Apache 2.4 on Ubuntu 20.04

Based on https://gist.github.com/GAS85/8dadbcb3c9a7ecbcb6705530c1252831

Requirements

  • A self-managed VPS or dedicated server with Ubuntu 20.04 running Apache 2.4.xx.
  • A registered domain name with working HTTPS (TLS/SSL). HTTP/2 only works alongside HTTPS because most browsers, including Firefox and Chrome, don’t support HTTP/2 in cleartext (non-TLS) mode.

Step 1: Install Apache2

Per default it will be apache2 version 2.4.41 what is enought for http2 support.

Drupal 8 kint set maxLevels in settings.php to prevent out of memory

Currently devel doesn't allow to override KINT configuration in a clean way. Hopefully this will be possible some day via setting in UI or drupal setting override in settings.php Until this happens you may use this dirty trick in settings.php to override the setting.

See issues:

Simply copy this into your settings.php and change the value accordingly (Kint default: 7)

Multipart MIME Email Guide

Multipart MIME Email Guide

This is a guide on how to send a properly formatted multipart email. Multipart email strings are MIME encoded, raw text email templates. This method of structuring an email allows for multiple versions of the same email to support different email clients.

// Example Multipart Email:
From: sender@example.com
To: recipient@example.com
Subject: Multipart Email Example
Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="boundary-string"

Stuff I wish I'd known sooner about service workers

Stuff I wish I'd known sooner about service workers

I recently had several days of extremely frustrating experiences with service workers. Here are a few things I've since learned which would have made my life much easier but which isn't particularly obvious from most of the blog posts and videos I've seen.

I'll add to this list over time – suggested additions welcome in the comments or via twitter.com/rich_harris.

Use Canary for development instead of Chrome stable

Chrome 51 has some pretty wild behaviour related to console.log in service workers. Canary doesn't, and it has a load of really good service worker related stuff in devtools.
