12:57
Omaha.com: Closer to 2 p.m., reporter Jeffrey Robb will join in to take questions. Feel free to ask in advance.

PerezJr: A clutch of supporters for Gray's proposal have gathered outside City Hall to prep for the upcoming hearing. [via Twitter]
1:09
PerezJr: Religious leaders leading a prayer for "justice for all who need it." [via Twitter]
1:13
PerezJr: Other leaders, now inside the hall, are speaking about their plans to speak against the proposal. [via Twitter]
1:17
PerezJr: Proponents of the resolution have a celebrity guest appearance planned during testimony... [via Twitter]
1:29
PerezJr: Folks, it is going to be a packed house at today's City Council meeting. Better get here soon if you want to watch, seats going fast. [via Twitter]
1:37
Jeffrey Robb: Hello and thanks for reading Omaha.com's live coverage of today's public hearing on Councilman Ben Gray's anti-discrimination ordinance.
1:37
Jeffrey Robb: I'm Jeffrey Robb, and I'm here with City Hall reporter Juan Perez Jr. You've seen seeing his tweets, and we'll feed those into the chat throughout our coverage.
1:38
PerezJr: Council members currently holding a separate meeting on property issues, in case anyone's curious. Regular council still set for 2pm start. [via Twitter]
1:39
Jeffrey Robb: As Perez mentioned, it's going to be full house, probably standing room only.
1:42
Jeffrey Robb: Councilman Gray's GLBT ordinance is No. 52 on a 76-item agenda. But my guess is the meeting will move pretty quickly leading up to the public hearing.
1:43
Jeffrey Robb: Word is that speakers will be held to a 2-minute limit on their testimony.
1:44
Jeffrey Robb: Those limits are not always strictly kept, so we'll have to see how Council President Tom Mulligan runs the meeting.
1:46
PerezJr: Plenty of Douglas County Sheriff deputies in the house to assess the security situation. [via Twitter]
1:47
Comment From Jerome
who is the surprise celebrity guest? I'm going with Oberst.
1:48
PerezJr: RT @chrismachian: Excited my first council meeting RT @OWHnews chambers filling up quickly. Join us for live coverage GLBT hearing http: ... [via Twitter]

Comment From Vernon_J_
What hashtag should we use today?
1:52
Comment From Speculator
Is there live video streaming either on omaha.com or somewhere else?
1:53
Jeffrey Robb: I don't believe so. The council meeting is on cable public access.
1:53
Comment From Vernon_J_
Hey Speculator, they have it on at 19.00 on CTI 22, so you can see it tonight.
1:54
Comment From Unbiased
Can someone explain why the wording is not changed to protect all citizens and not just those in certain segments of society. It does not make much sense to create a law for each "special group". Discrimination is discrimination and should not be tolerated. Thank you.
1:56
PerezJr: Some seats have opened up. [via Twitter]
1:57
Jeffrey Robb: As to Unbiased's comment, the current city ordinance sets out specific classes of people for discrimination protection: Race, color, creed, sex, age, disability, among others.
1:59
Jeffrey Robb: As we approach 2 p.m., the meeting is about to get started. All council members are present - they were here already and just concluded an unrelated meeting.
2:00
Jeffrey Robb: Still a packed house as people settle in for the meeting.
2:01
Jeffrey Robb: If you're just joining the chat, welcome. We're glad to have you.
2:02
Comment From Me
It does protect all citizens from all discrimination based on any sexual orientation, straight or gay.
2:02
Comment From Vernon_J_
Is this being moderated, or unfiltered?
2:07
Jeffrey Robb: I hope we get some comments and questions. But I'd like to lead an informed discussion.
2:08
Jeffrey Robb: Yes, I am moderating the comments.
2:08
PerezJr: ok, here we go. packed, packed house. [via Twitter]
2:09
Comment From LauraShafer
Just waiting for the vote.........
2:09
Comment From Alex
Will be interesting to see if people can follow speaking rules
2:09
Comment From Vernon_J_
Thanks Jeffrey, I saw 1 show up late. That's too bad.
2:11
Comment From jim
where do you think the largest opposition to this ordinance change comes from?
2:12
Jeffrey Robb: I'm not sure who will be speaking, on either side. I don't believe the council set up a sign-up procedure. But there will be a lot of speakers.
2:15
Comment From Alex
I would guess private business and the conservative religious base. Speakers are supposed to make good arguments without using religion or personal stories.
2:16
Jeffrey Robb: Alex, I don't think that's true about not using religion or personal stories. I know the Council President will try to keep speakers to the topic on the agenda.
2:17
Jeffrey Robb: On item 37 by the way.
2:18
Jeffrey Robb: Ben Gray's proposal is item No. 52.
2:19
PerezJr: Council approves spending some $$ to fix parts of NP Dodge Park marina and study effectiveness of @omahapolice ShotSpotter system. [via Twitter]
2:19
Comment From Jen Homann
Any idea of the make-up of the audience before we get started? How many are in support of the amendment and how many are against it?
2:20
Jeffrey Robb: It's hard to say for certain. I can tell there are a lot of supporters here, and religious leaders on both sides of the issue.
2:20
Comment From jim
If the comment to the council are anything like what has been posted on the OWH stories, the need for this ordinance should be obvious to the council.
2:21
Jeffrey Robb: Thanks again everyone for checking in for our coverage. Looks like we just went over 100 live readers.
2:22
Comment From Mike
The Council should put this important issue to a vote of the people
2:23
What is your opinion on Ben Gray's GLBT ordinance?
In favor
( 75% )
Oppose
( 24% )
Neutral

2:23
Comment From jim
The majority should never get to vote on rights for the minority....
2:24
Omaha.com: It's a busy one at City Hall
2:24
2:25
Comment From Boyd
Civil right issues shoud not be put up to a vote
2:27
Jeffrey Robb: Alexander Payne is in attendance at the meeting.
2:27
Jeffrey Robb: We're hearing that he will try to testify.
2:28
PerezJr: Yeah, Alexander Payne is here. Word is he might testify. [via Twitter]
2:28
Comment From M.A.
Well, technically, they aren't rights for the minority, they're rights for the entirety. The anti-discrimination ordinance, with or without Ben Gray's proposed changes, does not benefit one group over another, or provide ANY "special privileges"
2:28
Comment From Vernon_J_
Jim the majority of people never vote & if this was an #Equality law. Everyone has a Sexual Orientation. Could it be a #UnEqual law?
2:28
Comment From Carol
As a middle aged, white, married woman I want to be a protested class, too!!
2:29
Comment From Alex
I have never understood why something that does not really affect anyone else becomes such a huge issue that we have to vote on it. But at least people are voting!
2:29
Comment From Mike
You are putting it up for a vote with the council Boyd...In fact many cities have put this same issue up for a vote.
2:29
Jeffrey Robb: The hearing is getting close. a couple of items away.
2:29
Omaha.com: Standing room only
2:29
2:30
Jeffrey Robb: Here goes the discussion. People are rising to get in line.
2:31
Jeffrey Robb: Council President Mulligan asks everyone to be respectful, not applaud or convey disapproval.
2:31
Comment From M.A.
@ Carol- you ARE a protected class, you cannot be discriminated against based on the fact that you are white, and if the proposed changes occur, it will be illegal to discriminate against your heterosexuality.
2:31
Jeffrey Robb: Mulligan: If you stray from the topic, you will be asked to leave the podium.
2:31
PerezJr: Council Pres. Mulligan: "We need to be respectful of each other and we need to understand that different opinions will be offered today." [via Twitter]
2:32
Jeffrey Robb: Mulligan is using a green-red system for monitoring speaking time.
2:32
PerezJr: Mulligan: "Please remember that you are addressing the City Council, not the audience." [via Twitter]
2:32
Comment From Alex
Good point Carol!
2:32
Jeffrey Robb: Councilman Franklin Thompson asks for a moment to speak.
2:32
Comment From Unbiased
What is the mood like? Are people mad? threatening? compassionate?
2:33
Jeffrey Robb: Everybody is being quiet and respectful at the moment.
2:33
PerezJr: Thompson, the swing vote, wants to speak. "Your voice really will be heard ... what you say does make a difference." [via Twitter]
2:33
Jeffrey Robb: Thompson: Asks speakers to address all 7 council members, hopefully all will listen intently.
2:33
PerezJr: Thompson has said whoever "wins" today's debate will "get his vote". [via Twitter]
2:33
Omaha.com: Alexander Payne at the public hearing
2:33
2:34
Jeffrey Robb: UNO Professor Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado first speaker, brother of lesbian.
2:35
Jeffrey Robb: Alvarado: Ordinance is not just about business, will send message Omaha is open community.
2:35
Comment From Unbiased
@Robb - Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado.... Professor of what?
2:35
Jeffrey Robb: He's a political science professor.
2:36
Jeffrey Robb: Mulligan holds to a tight limit.
2:36
Comment From Boyd
Are all comments being posted?
2:37
Jeffrey Robb: No, I'm moderating the comments and also trying to keep up. If you have a question, please ask.
2:38
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Issue is not about transgender restroom access.
2:38
Comment From Allyson
I have never cared for the "will make Omaha look ...." argument. How about we do things that are good for Omaha...and not worry about the way it makes us look?
2:39
Jeffrey Robb: Mulligan again holding to 2 minute limit.
2:39
Jeffrey Robb: Councilman Thompson asks to allow 3 minutes for speakers.
2:39
Jeffrey Robb: Thompson: Don't want exercise of hearing to go through the motion.
2:39
PerezJr: Folks are running out of time on their testimony so far. Mulligan is cutting them short if need be. Thompson wants to up testimony to 3 mins [via Twitter]
2:40
Jeffrey Robb: Mulligan expands comments to 3 minutes.
2:40
Comment From David
Omahas appearance will drive business and people to or away from the city. A good image is good for Omaha.
2:41
PerezJr: 3 minutes it is. [via Twitter]
2:41
Comment From Mike
Mr. Robb isnt there an accommodation portion to this ordinance. In fact the language describing what is transgender is very broad. Bathrooms are covered in this ordinance.
2:42
Jeffrey Robb: Jerry Sullivan, UP lawyer and gay man, speaking.
2:42
Jeffrey Robb: Sullivan: Passing ordinance good for Omaha, employers and employees.
2:43
Jeffrey Robb: Sullivan: Prevailing standard among businesses is to protect gay employees from discrimination.
2:43
Comment From Allyson
Again, I find it an odd function of city government that the deciding voter in a significant issue will use a couple dozen 3 minute speeches to make his choice...when he has an entire constituency to represent
2:43
Comment From mpjeno
@David "A good image is good for Omaha" - yes!
2:44
Jeffrey Robb: Sullivan: After passing resolution on topic, this ordinance is next step.
2:45
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker Shane Strong addresses don't ask, don't tell in the military.
2:46
Comment From Allyson
Jeffrey - Where does the Mayor stand on this issue? I realize it depends to this Mayor who asks and when they ask, but what has he said publicly about his feeling on this ordinance?
2:46
Jeffrey Robb: Mayor Suttle supports this ordinance. He told me he will sign the ordinance if it passes.
2:47
Jeffrey Robb: Strong: Council's mission is to make city better for everyone.
2:48
Jeffrey Robb: Christopher Fisher, UNMC researcher, speaking on study of GLBT discrimination.
2:48
Comment From Alex
How long will they let this go on? I am sure there will more speakers than can be accomodated.
2:49
Jeffrey Robb: I'd say people will get their chance to speak. Hence the limits on time for each speaker.
2:49
Jeffrey Robb: Fisher: Professional opinion that discrimination is a real issue in Omaha, significant negative outcome in individual's health, employers and community.
2:50
PerezJr: Dr. Chris Fisher, UNMC researcher, is 5th speaker in support. Defends study results that say local LGBT residents experience discrimination. [via Twitter]
2:50
Jeffrey Robb: Dr. Jason Coleman, asst. professor at UNO, speaking on UNMC study.
2:51
Comment From Allyson
Do they have all the speakers on one side and then the other? So far, it seems the speakers have been all pro-ordinance. Or is that the general makeup of the audience?
2:51
Jeffrey Robb: The council is taking testimony from proponents first. Then will move on to opponents.
2:52
Jeffrey Robb: Coleman: Study was diverse in its respondents and a sizeable sample for the city.
2:52
Jeffrey Robb: Coleman: Professional opinion that GLBT discrimination is real issue in Omaha.
2:53
Comment From ryan
can the city vote in this ordinance? why is it up to city council?
2:53
PerezJr: All UNMC researchers careful to state their views/conclusions don't necessarily reflect that of the University of Nebraska. [via Twitter]
2:54
Jeffrey Robb: If the council votes so, the city could vote. The ordinance is up for a vote at the council now because Ben Gray is proposing it.
2:54
Comment From Vernon_J_
Ryan, if you get a petition you can bring it to a city vote, I imagine.
2:54
Comment From M.A.
@ Ryan- It is up to the City Council because it was a city councilman that proposed it.
2:55
Jeffrey Robb: Alexander Payne speaking, spelling out his last name.
2:55
PerezJr: "Good afternoon, my name is Alexander Payne. P-A-Y-N-E." [via Twitter]
2:55
Jeffrey Robb: Payne: Educated guess that these ordinances will be absolutely everywhere.
2:55
Jeffrey Robb: Payne: My dad always taught me, do it now.
2:56
Comment From David
The study quoted by Drs Fisher and Coleman can be found at http://www.unmc.edu/publichealth/docs/Midlands_LGBT_Community_Report_-_with_links.pdf
2:56
PerezJr: Payne: "My dad always taught me, 'Do it now.' Thanks very much." [via Twitter]
2:56
Jeffrey Robb: Thanks, David.
2:56
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker talking on behalf of lesbian who feels she can't be outed.
2:58
Jeffrey Robb: Anonymous woman says she still fears retalation even in anonymous testimony.
2:59
Omaha.com: Payne speaks
2:59
2:59
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker calls Omaha welcoming and supportive. If don't pass ordinance, will be harder to make that case. Unwelcoming "is not the Omaha I know."
3:00
PerezJr: Laura Burhenn, of the Mynabirds music group, now up to speak. "An unwelcoming and unsupportive community is not the Omaha I know." [via Twitter]
3:00
Jeffrey Robb: Burhenn: Loophole allows people to be fired based on who they love.
3:01
Jeffrey Robb: Burhenn: Council can end the state of people working in fear of retaliation.
3:01
Comment From Allyson
So Omaha was "welcoming" before the ordinance was proposed; but if they dont pass it will suddenly become "unwelcoming?" Why does the vote of a few people all of the sudden make an entire city unwelcoming, whent he speaker just said it is a welcoming city. That reaks of propaganda.
3:02
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker, a transgender man: I live in fear.
3:03
Jeffrey Robb: Transgender speaker: We transition to become better people.
3:04
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Some people don't understand process, but they don't experience the grief of presenting themselves to the world that doesn't feel right.
3:04
Comment From John
Can you tell us what Alexander Payne said in his testimony? Thanks.
3:05
Jeffrey Robb: Payne's testimony was quick. He said that cities in the coming years will be passing these ordinances in large numbers.
3:05
Jeffrey Robb: Payne said that if that's the case, then Omaha should pass the ordinance now.
3:06
Comment From Allyson
Jeffrey - any statistics you are aware of regarding how many "major" cities have similar ordinances?
3:06
Jeffrey Robb: Yes, Allyson, I researched this very topic. Omaha is in the minority among the 50 largest cities.
3:08
Jeffrey Robb: 35 cities have their own ordinance or are covered by a state law. Of the other 15, most of those have attempted to address this issue in some formal way.
3:09
Comment From Jimmy
Hey, the OWH just wrote a story about that! Most major metros already have rules protecting gays/lesbians from workplace discrimination.
3:09
Jeffrey Robb: Here is that story: http://www.omaha.com/article/20120227/NEWS01/702279947
3:11
Jeffrey Robb: Student: Have ethos of intollerance for LGBT students. Can say that those people matter.
3:12
Jeffrey Robb: Student: Opportunity to heal youth.
3:12
PerezJr: Still a long line of supporters waiting to testify... [via Twitter]
3:13
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker Craig Moody, small business owner: Adhering to anti-discrim ordinance is not a challenge.
3:13
Jeffrey Robb: Moody: This ordinance is good for business.
3:13
Comment From Guest
Are GLBT people covered by Federal anti-discrimination laws?
3:14
Jeffrey Robb: Not in the way that the GLBT community is asking for. A federal law has been proposed specific to GLBT, but not passed.
3:15
Jeffrey Robb: Moody: Ordinance not costly to small business.
Cites OWH story: http://www.omaha.com/article/20120227/NEWS01/702279947
3:15
Comment From ryan
its harder for larger busineses to handle.
3:15
Jeffrey Robb: Moody: Lack of protections put city at disadvantage to recruit talent.
3:16
Jeffrey Robb: Chamber's Young Professionals rep speaking.
3:16
Jeffrey Robb: Still a long line of speakers, but it looks like there's been a dent in the line.
3:17
Comment From Dave
How will this effect schools? I heard they want to allow kids of opposite sexes to be able to use the same bathroom and showers
3:18
Jeffrey Robb: YP rep: Our generation doesn't view Omaha as inclusive or diverse. This is your opportunity to take a stand for Omaha.
3:19
Comment From Taylor
I agree with the YP rep. As a medical student who recently moved to Omaha from Chicago, I was completely shocked to hear this measure failed the first time it was introduced.
3:20
Comment From DS
Apparently, the ordinance, acc to the link provided, allows religious institutions to be exempt from the changes... so they can continue to discriminate :(
3:20
Comment From Jimmy
Oh man, the restroom thing again? That simply isn't true. Please correct people or stop posting comments that are clearly factually incorrect.
3:22
Comment From Carol
Factually incorrect...like the comment about religious institutions continuing to discriminate? Disagreeing with this ordinance does not equal discrimination!
3:22
Jeffrey Robb: Regional director for Anti-Defamation League: speaks in support of ordinance.
3:24
Jeffrey Robb: ADL: Passing ordinance will put Omaha on the right side of history.
3:24
PerezJr: Alan Potash, regional head of Anti-Defamation League now speaking. "By passing this ordinance, Omaha will be on the right side of history." [via Twitter]
3:26
Comment From HR
If you disagree with an ordinance that prohibits discrimination, then what are you supporting? That discrimination should NOT be prohibited?
3:26
Comment From David
@carol. Please read the ordinance. There is an amendment exempting religious organizations from an antidiscrimination ordinance. Thereby allowing them to discriminate.
3:26
Comment From Jeremy
Religious organizations are exempt.
3:27
Jeffrey Robb: Going on 1 hour of testimony here. And we have 199 live readers on the chat. 19 speakers so far.
3:28
Comment From Taylor
Not all religious organizations discriminate! There are 257 religious leaders from the region who have declared "Homosexuality is not a sickness, not a choice, and not a sin. We find no rational biblical or theological basis to condemn or deny the rights of any person based on sexual orientation."
3:30
Jeffrey Robb: Pastor for GLBT-friendly church: We can't publish a directory of our members.
3:31
Jeffrey Robb: Pastor says his gay partner will be deployed to Afghanistan. He tells council "May God bless you and keep you.
3:31
Comment From Guest
thanks for the chat. looks like this hearing will be going on for awhile.
3:31
Jeffrey Robb: Thanks, Guest. You're one of 221 readers now. Great following.
3:32
Comment From Nancy Line Jacobs
When you're gay, can you do simple things that straight people take for granted like putting a photo of your partner on your desk? Dancing with them at the holiday party?
3:34
Comment From David
@Nancy I can't.
3:35
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Omaha needs to create safe spaces in the workplace so everyone can reach their potential.
3:36
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker is lesbian and small business owner.
3:36
Comment From Boyd
Are the council members attentive or do they seemed bored?
3:36
Jeffrey Robb: No, I think they are paying attention.
3:37
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Son was fired for his orientation after his regional manager visited the business, he wasn't "a good fit."

3:39
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker cites the case of a transgender woman working as a custodian at a local school district.
3:40
Comment From Troy
Omaha needs this ordinance. My husband was fired from his mgmt job. They said it was for poor performance, but he was never written up, or had any issues. In fact he was interviewing for a higher position. BUT it was common knowlwdge tbat his boss did not like gay people (including his own sister) and had made many remarks against gay people. How can you be allowed to fire someone for no valud reason???? We moved to council bluffs...a truly welcoming town in a state that protects us and reconizes our legal marriage. Neb lost of tax money!
3:40
Jeffrey Robb: UNO student gov't rep presents student gov't resolution supporting the ordinance.
3:41
Jeffrey Robb: UNO graduates will leave this community because they won't feel safe in their jobs, speaker says.
3:42
3:43
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker is bisexual, says his school counselor helped him through.
3:43
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker, gay man: I live here because I choose to live here.
3:44
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker says he and his partner are out to their community and have their neighborhood's support.
3:45
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Pass ordinance so we can stay here.
3:46
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker, lesbian: I love Omaha, to have to look at other cities for jobs because of Omaha's lack of protection would be heart breaking.
3:46
Jeffrey Robb: At least 15 more speakers in the line of supporters.
3:47
Jeffrey Robb: Former Omaha mayor, current county commissioner Mike Boyle in line to speak.
3:47
Comment From Alison Kruse
I would hate to have to move, but MA sounds good if this ord. isn't paased.
3:48
Comment From Unbiased
Is anyone speaking out against it?
3:49
Jeffrey Robb: Council is still taking testimony from supporters. Opponents will get the next turn.
3:49
Comment From Taylor
I didn't know there were so many people are actively threatened by workplace discrimination. I've known since childhood that discrimination is always wrong, but the testimony today has really made me realize the urgency of the ordinance.
3:49
Comment From JA
I just wish I had the right to add my wife on my insurance coverage at my work. When I asked about it they looked at me as tho I had 3 heads and snakes for hair.
3:50
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker, who is transgender: So much support from parts of community, but not all.
3:51
Jeffrey Robb: Transgender speaker: Why do people not want me to be protected? People oppose out of hate and malice.
3:51
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Council doesn't have experience of being called a freak for wanting to be comfortable in own skin.
3:52
Comment From Guest
Heard Alexander Payne is down there?
3:52
Jeffrey Robb: Yes, he spoke earlier.
3:54
Comment From Guest
As a citizen represented by Franklin Thompson I am betting he loves the spotlight and will drag out his vote till the last minute
3:56
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker is lesbian and mother: People are scared of losing livelihood because of who they are. Says she's tired of fighting for basic human rights.
3:58
Comment From David
Please provide more updates about the individual speakers as the present
3:58
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker from Lincoln GLBT organization: Ordinance will move Omaha forward.
3:59
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker from Omaha, now lives in Lincoln: His family wouldn't support this 10 years ago, but will today.
4:00
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker says he is gay. His mother asked him not to put that on Facebook so employers wouldn't find it.
4:00
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: I want to prove my mother wrong.
4:02

4:02
Jeffrey Robb: ACLU: Omaha will be joining very good company if ordinance passed.

4:03
Jeffrey Robb: ACLU: Ordinance is a matter of basic fairness.
4:03
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker, who is lesbian: Asks city to consider my human rights.
4:05
Jeffrey Robb: UNO student, bisexual, representing UNO GLBT group, is speaking. Says this isn't a moral issue.
4:06
Comment From Taylor
I'm curious to see what the opponents of the ordinance would say to all these people who have come forward to share their experiences of discrimination. "Sorry, you don't matter?"
4:06
Comment From JA
Is it possible that with a more tolerant Omaha it would trickle down possible teach future generations to be more tolerant? Possibly would help with bullying.
4:07
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Can't solve issue of bullying if as adults we don't believe in a culture of equality.
4:07
Jeffrey Robb: Mike Boyle speaking. Councilman Jerram asks him to repeat his name, jokingly.
4:08
PerezJr: Mike Boyle, former mayor, is up. Makes sure to spell his name for the record. [via Twitter]
4:08
Comment From Dave
Should political beliefs be covered?
4:08
Comment From ANON
Adding another protected class does not promote a culture of equality.
4:08
Comment From David
@JA I agree. And what kind of messages will it send to the bullies and the bullied if the council decides its okay to treat people different just because they are gay.
4:09
Jeffrey Robb: Boyle: Represented as an attorney people discharged for being gay.
4:10
Jeffrey Robb: Boyle: Client started getting harassed by coworkers and soon after he was fired.
4:10
Jeffrey Robb: Boyle: You have no status, there is nothing I can do for you.
4:10
Jeffrey Robb: Boyle: Filed complaint with the state, had a full hearing, made our allegations, employer denied it. State threw it out bec it had no jurisdiction. that man moved away.
4:11
Jeffrey Robb: Boyle: Another client committed suicide who was in the same box.
4:11
Comment From mpjeno
Sorry - this may have already been discussed. When can we expect a vote on this amendment?
4:12
Jeffrey Robb: Not today. The vote will happen next Tuesday.
4:12
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Council has power, education and compassion to stand for people's beliefs - right to work, make money and be respected for who they are.
4:13
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: People are fired for who they are, who they love, and that's not right.
4:14
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker, lesbian: Just asking for protection that others have.
4:14
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker, lesbian: Am free to speak because I am self-employed. Is a former Omaha elementary school principal.
4:15
Comment From Boyd
Jeffrey, is it your understanding that it is 3-3 with Thompson the deciding vote?
4:16
Jeffrey Robb: Yes, it looks that way. Thompson has not said how he will vote, but he's putting a lot of weight on today's testimony.
4:16
PerezJr: RT @chrismachian: Former #Omaha Mayor Mike Boyle testifies before city council about LGBT rights. http://twitter.com/chrismachian/status/177154959513620480/photo/1 [via Twitter]
4:16
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Kept silent while working as elementary principal.
4:17
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Took district's voluntary early retirement program. Being in the closet inhibits how you interact in the workplace.
4:18
Jeffrey Robb: The speaker line isn't getting much shorter. Still around 10-12 people - one speak, another joins the line.
4:19
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: His gay partner is not out, is local teacher for a school district and a coach.
4:19
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: No one at his school is allowed to know if he has a partner.
4:19
Comment From Allyson
Jeffrey - does there appear to ba as many people waiting to speak in opposition as there have been people in favor?
4:20
Jeffrey Robb: The council hasn't called up for opponents yet. So we'll have to see.
4:20
Jeffrey Robb: Pastor at First United Methodist Church: This is not a religious question before the council. Opponents will quote scripture and try to make it so.
4:20
Jeffrey Robb: Pastor: There is clearly a difference of opinion in the faith community.
4:21
Comment From Rick
Mr. Robb: Has Councilman Thompson given any indication of his leaning, other than that he's going to decide the "winner" of the debate? Has he ever justified his abstention last year?
4:21
Jeffrey Robb: No, he hasn't given a strong indication. I'll be watching for that if he talks later.
4:21
Comment From CookiedogX
Supporters of the ordinance are hoping that since F Thompson works at UNO those students will put enough pressure on Thompson to vote yes. But Thompson hates to vote with Mr Gray on anything.

4:23
Jeffrey Robb: Pastor: Be legal and political leaders in enacting justice for all.

4:27
Jeffrey Robb: Straight man from Councilman Thompson's district: No one should be treated as second-class citizens.
4:29

4:29
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Heard overwhelming testimony that ordinance is desperately, urgently needed.
4:30
Jeffrey Robb: Under 10 speakers left to go on supporters, for now.
4:31

Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: I think Omaha has stated what it wants.
4:32

4:32
Comment From Jeremy
Yeah, yeah slow it down this pace of change is too fast! Sincerely, Alabama, 1965
4:34
Comment From Taylor
What reasoning does the council president give for cutting off the speakers? Has he declared a similar limit for the opponents?
4:34
Jeffrey Robb: We're at 2 hours of testimony. Just wants to move along the discussion, I suppose.
4:35
Jeffrey Robb: Local business owner, gay man testifying.
4:36
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Ridiculous to still have discussion in 2012. Countless friends left bec Omaha does not accept them.

4:37
Jeffrey Robb: 5 speakers left, at around 51 total so far.
4:38
Comment From Alex
Plus it is getting repetitive. The point has been made.

Comment From Taylor
Is there a stated ending time for this forum?
4:39
Jeffrey Robb: No, no deadline to wrap this up.
4:41
Jeffrey Robb: Pastor at First United Methodist Church misspeaks, as council to pass this ordination.
4:41
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker, mother and lesbian: Teach children that equality in Omaha wins over hatred and fear.
4:42
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: It's wrong that he has to come back to council to ask for ordinance again.
4:43
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker: Facts clearly state that this is needed in Omaha.
4:44
Jeffrey Robb: Last speaker in favor, bisexual woman: Felt compelled to stand after hearing about woman who could not come forward to testify.
4:45
PerezJr: After nearly 3 hours and close to 60 proponents, it's time for those opposed to Gray's proposal to speak. They're very eager to start. [via Twitter]

4:52
Comment From Boyd
Did it seem like there were people wanting to testify for that were cut off?
4:53
Jeffrey Robb: Yes, I'm trying to give some explainer of the person when I introduce them. Then I might just refer to that person and speaker so I can type up the comments quicker.

I am saddened that this hatred still exists today. I know many religious believers that do not share the same views.
5:06
Comment From Troy
If testimony started at 230....wht is perezJr saying that over 3 hours of proponents have spoken. Looks like around 2.5 hours is the truth!
5:07

I find it interesting..while the propenents were speaking...the poll on this site went from 22% opposed to 30%; now while the opposition is speaking it has fallen to 24% again. It seems none of us wants to listen to any of this. We are turned off by both sides of this argument. (I'm generalizing, but that's what polls do).

6:18
Comment From Taylor
I can imagine it's hard to sit there while a parade of people tell you that you are evil and that you don't deserve human rights. But maybe that's just me.
6:19

Do we know in which direction each council member is voting?
6:44
Jeffrey Robb: Based on the vote in 2010, it appears Gray, Festersen and Jerram are in favor, Stothert, Mulligan and Gernandt opposed. How Franklin Thompson votes will likely decide this. He did not vote last time.

6:51
Jeffrey Robb: Speaker, a supporter, didn't realize he was speaking during opposition.
