PASSAGE SUR LE DISQUE SOLAIRE
PASSING ON THE SOLAR DISC
A SWARM OF AL CORPUSCLES VU OBSERVATORY ZACATECAS MEXICO
J was established in Zacatecas Observatory located at 2502m above sea nivea u the daily observation of the state of the solar surface by drawing direct spray spots and faculae granules and protuberances of the solar chromosphere by means of the spectroscope.
For this purpose the j fits equatorial 0m lti opening of a projection apparatus which receives a sheet of paper an image of the sun 250 in diameter 0m the field of the telescope is projecting itself on a surface of unenlightened 0m 260 When the solar disc offers some interest I take photographs of 067 0m diameter plates do with the instant gélatinobromure of money.
The dome of the Observatory has small windows and thick black curtains so that it penetrates the objective that only the Sun imago This arrangement allows always note with precision and clarity faculae and spots every detail and granulations with the transparency of the atmosphere at the altitude at which the Observatory is situated in a tropical sky 9 22 46 34 latitude.
August 12, 1883 at 8am I started to draw sunspots j when suddenly noticed a small body of light that penetrated the field of the telescope is drawing on my paper for reproducing spots and ran the disk of the Sun projecting itself as a nearly circular shadow.
I was not back from my surprise that the same phenomenon occurred again and this view with such frequency in the space of 2 hours I could count up to 283 bodies across the Sun's disk.
Gradually the clouds generate the observation could not be repeated that at the time of passage of the sun through the meridian and only during 40TM during this interval were counted again the passage 48 other body traces followed by the body indicate a direct movement the West to the East more or less inclined to the north or south of the disk a few m inutes of observation j've noticed that these bodies that looked black and dark, each perfectly round and other more or less expanded by projecting on the solar disk bright images provided by leaving the edges and across the field of the telescope.
Intervals varied passages sometimes he spent one or two n using that third half a second longer than one second to cross the solar disk and a minute or two passed before s that it appeared to ea other times he spent 15 or 20 almost at the same time so that it was difficult to count J've set the trajectory of many of these bodies on the solar disk noting the input and output on paper that I used to draw stains the paper and the scope of the equatorial followed through a movement watches the Sun's apparent diurnal motion of the celestial Voulé Fig 118 is a reduced copy of the drawing that I made of the solar disk of that day 25Omm diameter with trajectories body and sunspots.
Often taking photographs of the Sun when the disc has notable spots and faculae I set also able to photograph rare and interesting passage of the body through the solar disk.
To this end I replaced the same objective of the equatorial lj Or another of equal strength but which household chemical j adaptai the eye and photographic chamber After various tests in order to fully develop the body I was able to take several photographs, j to address the most interesting astronomy While I was taking these photographs had an assistant researcher in the body of the equatorial The photograph was taken in the second wet collodion This speed left me no time to filter and properly prepared bathroom is also negative it just veiled by the developer The image of the Sun is not at home but that the body m offered more interest this time.
Although the mere sight projection and all they appeared round or spherical body can be seen in various photographs the bodies are not spherical but for the most irregular shapes.
J have said that in the projection of the field of the telescope body seemed bright and emerged as bright streaks but that crossing the solar disk they appeared opaque By observing carefully the photograph and the negative there is a body surrounded by nebulosity and obscure trails in the field of the telescope and outside the disk looked bright That would make me believe that the passage of bright streaks on the disc body absorbed actinic light from the Sun or decreased power photogenic.
In the afternoon the clouds m forbade any comments.
So I took all my measurements and established a plan of observations in the case where the phenomenon happen again the next day.
On August 13, the first two hours of the day offered a m up to cloudy in the morning then 8u s clouds faded a bit and I observed the same phenomenon m soon appeared again and during the 45 minutes of observation that allowed us to state the the sky we counted 116 bodies across the solar disk.
Immediately after the 12 days of observation had telegraphed to the Observatories of Mexico and Puebla to pray to observe this phenomenon, but it was invisible to these observatories To do an indirect way to check the approximate distance from the hive body I carefully put point the seeker of the equatorial telescope and a telescope mirror silver eddy diameter 0 10 directing them on the solar disk and the body also had the night j the opportunity to lead also to the planets and Moon which had been for two days in its first quarter without changing the home and saw the moon alone is almost at home.
This fact coupled with the invisibility of the phenomenon in Mexico City and Puebla or elsewhere makes me believe that these bodies were close enough to the Earth at a shorter distance than the Moon and their parallax was significant because that Mexico City and Puebla were projected outside the solar disk.
Jose A y Bonilla
Director of the Observatory of Zacatecas Mexico
Editor's Note - The observation of M Bonilla is very interesting but is not easy to explain h The date of August 12 and 13 reminds aware of shooting stars this time, but it would be odd that we had not seen n in Mexico Would this not to Puebla birds were examined with great attention the photograph which i figure 19 is a reproduction black body oval is preceded and followed by light trails its length is 0mm 0mm width 9 6 7 0mm the solar diameter is 66mm the sun is not at home but the corpuscle Outside the sun seemed bright streaks we should be inclined to believe that it is here to s birds insects or dust in any case higher corpuscles belonging to our atmosphere
