Only seems to work once, but... this is farther than I got. (I was struggling to get a tty, this nicely avoids the issue, although sudo is needed.)

sudo can be avoided adding a udev rule to assign usb devices to a group. Make sure your users are in the group. plugdev or similar seemed to be available on my ubuntu system.
