MatWeb

MatWeb is an online material database contains a wide range of materials based on its properties. The database has information of 105,000 metals, plastics, ceramics, and composites. No registration is required in this website.

The pages lets user to search materials not only based on a property range or composition range but also based on manufacturer name, trade name or materials categories.

The page also provide a [tool] (http://www.matweb.com/tools/tools.aspx) to convert units, calculate weights and moments of inertia, convert hardness values for metals and plastics. In addition, there is another tool named engineering glossary which contains over 700 definitions of materials terms in convenient alphabetical lists. This feature helps to narrow searching. The tool section is only available for registered and premium users. However, registration on this page only requires nothing more than a valid email addressand after that the page allows you to use tools to compare properties of selected materials side-by-side.

How to search in MatWeb

In the search section part, you can select the material category from the list. Inaddition, you can choose up to 3 material properties and narrow them down in a certain range. Here is an example of searching in aluminum alloy category for ones that have tensile strength of 500-800 MPa and elongation at break of 10-50%

After search, each links contains information about:

  • Material category information
  • Physical properties
  • Mechanical properties
  • Electrical Properties
  • Thermal Properties
  • Processing Properties

These infomation can be printed or saved as PDF or Excel files or export to FEA Export data to your CAD/FEA program
